‘Big Brother’ database for phones and e-mails
A massive government database holding details of every phone call, e-mail and time spent on the internet by the public is being planned as part of the fight against crime and terrorism. Internet service providers (ISPs) and telecoms companies would hand over the records to the Home Office under plans put forward by officials.
The information would be held for at least 12 months and the police and security services would be able to access it if given permission from the courts.

That is not much different from what is actually happening here in the U.S. Ours operates on a key-word system so our government only keeps the information that may turn out to be important. As far as the judicial safeguard, which we have, they never turn the government down when they request to access the information.

The problem here that makes it different is that they are coming out into the open with it. They are getting bolder about taking away rights and that is never a good sign.
