What’s with this world? Gillian Gibbons, a British primary-school teacher working in Sudan, made an almost-fatal mistake. She allowed her seven year-old students name their class teddy bear “Mohammed.” None of the parents complained. But that didn’t matter to the Sudanese clerics who incited thousands of jihadist to call for her execution. She has been sentenced to 15 days in jail and then will be deported. That’s much better than the 40 lashes she could have received. But not as good as a good beheading.
Update December 4, 2007: Gillian has been pardoned by the President of Sudan and released from jail after serving eight days. She is now safely back home in Britain.
