Doctors worried by Supreme Court gun ruling

By Maggie Fox, Health and Science Editor Wed Jul 9, 7:44 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Last month’s Supreme Court ruling striking down a strict gun control law in the U.S. capital will lead to more deaths and accidental injuries, the editors of the New England Journal of Medicine said on Wednesday.

They joined a growing clamor from medical doctors, especially emergency room physicians, who fear a surge of accidental deaths, murders and suicides if handguns become more easily available than they already are.

The ruling struck down a law in Washington that forbade personal ownership of handguns. The court made explicit, for the first time, that Americans had rights as individuals to own guns.

It won praise from President George W. Bush, Republican presidential candidate John McCain and guns rights advocates. But gun control groups expressed concern about new legal attacks on existing gun laws.

Iran test-fires more missiles in Persian Gulf

By NASSER KARIMI

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) – Iran test-fired more long-range missiles overnight in a second round of exercises meant to show that the country can defend itself against any attack by the U.S. or Israel, Iranian state television reported Thursday.

The weapons have “special capabilities” and included missiles launched from naval ships in the Persian Gulf, along with torpedoes and surface-to-surface missiles, the broadcast said. It did not elaborate.

A brief video clip showed two missiles being fired simultaneously in the darkness.

The report came hours after Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice warned Iran that Washington will not back down in the face of threats against Israel.

“We are sending a message to Iran that we will defend American interests and the interests of our allies,” Rice said Thursday in Georgia at the close of a three-day Eastern European trip.

Among the missiles Iran said it tested Wednesday was a new version of the Shahab-3, which officials have said has a range of 1,250 miles and is armed with a 1-ton conventional warhead.

That would put Israel, Turkey, the Arabian peninsula, Afghanistan and Pakistan all within striking distance.

I hope this doesn’t lead us into another war. I can’t see how we could pull it off and Russia is so mad at us right now that if they really do help Iran we could be in a lot of trouble.

Barak hints at Israel’s readiness to strike Iran

JERUSALEM – Israel’s defense minister hinted Thursday that Israel was ready to attack Iran’s nuclear program, saying it didn’t balk before “when its vital security interests” were at stake.

Defense Minister Ehud Barak’s allusion to Israel’s 1981 airstrike on an unfinished Iraqi nuclear reactor came at a time of intensified tensions between Israel and its archenemy, Iran.

Tehran launched war games and tests of a long-range missile this week after saying Tel Aviv would be “set on fire” if Israel were to attack Iran.

“Israel is the strongest country in the region and has proved in the past that it doesn’t hesitate to act when its vital security interests are at stake,” Barak told a meeting of his Labor Party.

But he quickly tempered his remarks, noting that “the reactions of enemies … need to be taken into consideration as well.”

Jan, Israel might feel they have no choice. What I want to know is if we will join Israel if it happens.

Then we have the problem of, if we do go to war with Iran and things really blow up (literally and figuratively) we wouldn’t be able to get oil from a lot of OPEC countries because they would be enemies and also the price would rise so high we wouldn’t be able to wage an effective war. So much for not having hardly any domestic oil. Dangerous position to be in.

OPEC chief warns of ‘unlimited’ oil prices if Iran is attacked

VIENNA: The head of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries warned Thursday that oil prices would see an “unlimited” increase in the case of a military conflict involving Iran, because the group’s members would be unable to make up the lost production.

“We really cannot replace Iran’s production – it’s not feasible to replace it,” Abdalla Salem El-Badri, the OPEC secretary general, said in an interview.

Iran, the second-largest producing country in OPEC, after Saudi Arabia, produces about four million barrels of oil a day out of the daily worldwide production of close to 87 million barrels.

The country has been locked in a lengthy dispute with Western nations over its nuclear ambitions.

In recent weeks, the price of oil has risen higher on speculation that Israel could be preparing to mount an attack on the country’s nuclear facilities. The saber-rattling intensified this week with missile tests by Iran.

Matt, Condi Rice says we will definitely fight for Israel if she is attacked. If the Middle Eastern countries didn’t know we would then Israel would be in big trouble.

The new kings of the world have spoken. These people are very arrogant. I don’t want war with Iran but I hate the power these men yield.

That has further shaken oil markets because of concerns that any conflict with Iran could disrupt oil shipments from the Gulf region.

“The prices would go unlimited,” Badri said during the interview, referring to the effect of a military conflict. “I can’t give you a number.”

McCain breaks with adviser over ‘whiners’ remark

BELLEVILLE, Mich. – John McCain sharply broke from an economic adviser who dubbed the United States “a nation of whiners” in a “mental recession” as the Republican presidential candidate sought to counter criticism that he’s weak on the economy.

Sensing an opening, Democrat Barack Obama turned the remarks against his rival.

“I strongly disagree” with Phil Gramm’s remarks, McCain told reporters in what amounted to nothing short of a smackdown against one of his top surrogates and longtime friends. “Phil Gramm does not speak for me. I speak for me.”

The Republican presidential hopeful said a person who just lost a job or a mother struggling to pay for a child’s education “isn’t suffering from a mental recession.”

“America is in great difficulty. And we are experiencing enormous economic challenges as well as others,” McCain said, seeking to stem the fallout from Gramm’s comments.

SGS Says:

Matt, we won’t be able to fight war on three prolonged fronts — Afghanistan, Iraq and Iran. Our military force already was at its all-time smallest (true, we have expanded since Clinton Administration, but we never have been restored to the level of pre-Cliniton era). This is why we have been tapping into our reserves and National Guard forces. We already are rotating through every single man and woman in the services. Many of them already are serving second or third terms. I do want to help Israel all we can, but we are severely limited. No, we simply do not have the manpower to be involved in other war front, not without drafting.

The way young people are spoiled nowadays, and I know, I’m one of them, I can’t imagine a draft getting off the ground without millions of people freaking out. Canada would gain a lot of immigrants. You are right about us not being able to handle a third front. And if we did, we would leave our homeland so freaking wide open that I don’t think our enemies could resist.

SGS Says:

Ghost, are you sure our country is not already “freaking wide open” with zero border control and with our National Guards and reserves serving aboard? We have not been attacked only because the armies of our neighboring countries are in a much worse shape than ours, and it is a logistical impossibility to move forces across the oceans in time quickly enough to catch us off the guard. And besides, as Gorbachev once told Reagen when asked why USSR had not invade USA, there are too many citizens who have guns. They will be troublesome to overcome. No, fighting on other front will only demoralize our military and caused our country to go bankrupted. We already are spending almost 500+ billions dollars a year for just two fronts, and Iran is much bigger and has more people than Iraq! It will kill us.

Jesse Says:

The U.S. use to be in a safe position but we aren’t now. China has our old base on the Panama Canal and a base in the Caribbean and they have long range missiles that can reach our west coast plus millions of loyal Chinese in Canada. We are no longer safe.
