UN warns another cyclone is forming near Myanmar

BANGKOK, Thailand – The U.N. says another cyclone in forming near Myanmar, which was devastated by a killer storm earlier this month.

U.N. spokeswoman Amanda Pitts couldn’t say where the landfall would be or when it would become a full-fledged cyclone.

She told reporters Wednesday that “the chances of it (cyclone) happening is good.”

She said the information about the possible cyclone came from the Joint Typhoon Warning center, which is part of the U.N.’s World Meteorological Center.

The May 3 cyclone that pulverized Myanmar’s Irrawaddy delta left more than 60,000 people dead or missing.

Texas concedes this “minor” is an adult. By keeping pregnant adult mothers in custody they get control over their babies.

Sect mother of newborn not a minor, Texas concedes

By MICHELLE ROBERTS, Associated Press Writer Tue May 13, 7:52 PM ET

SAN ANTONIO – Texas child welfare officials conceded Tuesday that a newborn’s mother, held in foster care as a minor after being removed from a polygamous sect’s ranch, is an adult.

A Child Protective Services attorney told state District Judge Barbara Walther that the mother of a boy born April 29 is not a minor, as CPS had claimed as justification for holding her.

The woman had been held along with more than 400 children taken last month from a west Texas ranch run by the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. State officials say the children were endangered by underage and polygamous spiritual marriages.

“We were presented with credible evidence that this minor is, in fact, an adult,” said CPS spokeswoman Marleigh Meisner.

I saw this story on Yahoo this morning and thought i would share it.

HANWANG, China – Thousands of Chinese soldiers rushed on Wednesday to repair a dam badly cracked by the country’s massive earthquake, while rescuers arrived for the first time in the epicenter of the disaster.
…the quake had damaged 391 mostly small dams.

Gaza rocket hits mall in S. Israel, wounding 14

JERUSALEM – A rocket fired from the Gaza Strip exploded in a shopping center in the southern Israeli city of Ashkelon on Wednesday, wounding at least 14 people, rescue officials said.

The attack came as President Bush wrapped up talks in Jerusalem with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. The Israeli leader said Israel would not tolerate attacks by extremists in Gaza, which has been controlled by the Islamic militants of the Hamas movement since last June.

Two militant groups, the Iranian-backed Islamic Jihad and the Hamas-linked Popular Resistance Committees, claimed responsibility for the rocket strike.

I feel so sorry for Israel. The Palestinians will never give them peace.

Sean Hannity said on his radio program today that conservatives have no energy and no enthusiasm so we are going to lose seats in congress. He said when republicans had control of congress that we didn’t govern right. We were acting like liberals with creating big government. We have to get back to true conservatism.

I’ve noticed that even here on this blog we don’t have as much energy and enthusiasm. When we still were excited about people to support in the primaries there were a lot of people joining this blog and lots of enthusiasm. Since then bit by bit we have been losing that. Now we don’t have nearly as many comments and I can feel the apathy. We have to fight that.

Red Cross: Up to 128,000 may have died in Myanmar

YANGON, Myanmar – The Red Cross on Wednesday boosted its estimate of the cyclone death toll in Myanmar to as many as 128,000 — a much higher figure than the government tally. The U.N. warned a second wave of deaths will follow unless the military regime lets in more aid quickly.

The grim forecast came as heavy rains drenched the devastated Irrawaddy River delta, disrupting aid operations already struggling to reach up to 2.5 million people in urgent need of food, water and shelter.

“Another couple of days exposed to those conditions can only lead to worsening health conditions and compound the stress people are living in,” said Shantha Bloemen, a spokeswoman for UNICEF.

T. Fan, I didn’t notice your post. I almost wish I hadn’t blogged the latest from Myanmar and just commented on yours instead. I agree with Sean and you. Sometimes I have to work hard to keep myself interested in what is happening in the world because I see conservatives throwing up their hands and walking off. It is discouraging but we can’t give up.

It’s easier for younger people like me because we have a lot of energy and we haven’t gotten tired of this kind of thing yet. It is sad that a lot of people aren’t coming around here as much but I think part of that is because more people are on blogs in the winter when there isn’t as much to do. I read something about that so it isn’t just here. But I know it is also true that conservatives are getting so discouraged that they are fading into the background. That is scary and we have to try and not let that happen.

Matt and T.Fan, I believe you are overdue for some encouragement! :) Your comments remind me of a hymn which read in part:

We will not retreat, though our numbers may be few
When compared with the opposite host in view;

(Here, being in minority can be very discouraged)

But an unseen pow’r will aid me and you
In the glorious cause of truth.

If we do what’s right we have no need to fear,
For the Lord, our helper, will ever be near;
In the days of trial his Saints he will cheer,
And prosper the cause of truth.

(And here is the chorus, which gives us all the courage!)

Fear not, though the enemy deride,
Courage, for the Lord is on our side.
We will heed not what the wicked will say,
But the Lord alone we will obey.

Sorry about inserting here… But want you to be aware as long as we are doing the right things, the Lord will be there along us! So, do go at it with patience and hope!

No apathy here. Yesterday I learned about this media page http://capwiz.com/jbs/dbq/media/ where you type in your ZIP code and it takes you to a page that lists all the media (including national) that covers your area.

Select the Newpapers, TV stations, and radio stations you wish to contact then compose a message or letter to the editor. You can send your opinion to all of the ones you want with one click.

How will you know if they publish your opinion? I think all you will have to do is put an original phrase from you email in quotes and google it.

Anyway, I think this is so exciting. I’ll keep you apprised of the results and hope that anyone else who uses this media page will do the same.

I want to add here a different perspective of the biofuels and its effect on the food price. The gist of this article is:

During these years, the US population increased by about 14 percent, from 264 million in 1995 to 301 million in 2007. We needed only about 25 million additional tons of corn to meet our rising domestic, non-ethanol consumption and export requirements. In fact, we produced an additional 126 million tons. Obviously, the notion that our increased use of corn for ethanol has “caused” food shortages is false.

So what’s going on?

The answer lies in the biggest, most under-reported story of our lives: Today, more human beings are emerging from poverty than at any time in history. If the present trend continues, within our lifetimes — or certainly within our children’s lifetimes — the majority of human beings will have emerged from poverty and joined the middle class.

Good reading for a bigger picture on the causes of food shortage throughout the world.

I am one of those who haven’t been commenting as much and I will admit to discouragement. It really helps to read these kinds of comments and know I’m not alone and then get the encouragement I need too. SGS, I loved those words from that hymn. They are perfect for right now. Our numbers are fewer than they should be because so many are discouraged but this helps a lot.

Update on http://capwiz.com/jbs/dbq/media/ You can only choose 5 media sources at a time but I suppose you can copy your message and then send to five more as many times as you want.
