The Day that Freedom Died
Posted by Joy Bischoff under: Constitution in Peril; Rejecting Herd Mentality; World Economy .
Tuesday night, I began to have a dark, unsettled feeling. I asked my 18-year-old son if he knew of any reason I should be upset and he did not. Trying to shrug it off, I kept myself distracted. Wednesday morning I woke with a stronger feeling of concern and it grew stronger all day. We all watched the stock market take a second dive for the week that day and although I had the feeling that was tied to my heavy feeling, it did not seem to answer the extent of my concern. Yesterday, those feelings clarified when I heard that the administration decided to step in and save the wealthy from the consequences of their actions by taking over control of the financial sector of the country. Surely we understand that who pulls the strings on finances, controls society.
On many political issues, I attempt to show tolerance toward the opposing view. I do this because I do not want to drive away our readers since we are attempting to be inclusive toward all who love the Constitution. However, I cannot, I will not soft pedal the seriousness of what has just happened. People are willing to sell their children’s future freedoms for economic stability. Unwilling to allow the financial system to clean itself out, people are celebrating the move by the government to put an end to our free market economy in order to keep the bird in hand.
Rush Limbaugh stated this morning, “The world is cheering as the United States is going socialist”.
Repeating a story I have shared before, when I was in high school in a Citizenship class, we were each given a hypothetical Island with a set of very difficult financial and social problems. I was the only student out of over thirty who implemented a free government. For two days I argued with the rest of the class on the benefits of freedom verses socialism. They all adamantly held to the position that it was simply too difficult to solve problems without strict, dictatorial control. The easiness of the way is very tempting. No one wants to struggle. Finally, the teacher stepped in and tried to show the students the long term benefits of a free society. We have been so spoiled by the gifts of living in a free society, that many Americans do not understand the emotional pain of living with limited freedoms.
The fruits of socialism will not be felt over night. They will take time to grow, but the tree is now rooted in and we will pay a steep price for the bitter fruit that will be forced down our throats in the future. I don’t know when but it will happen.

Bush administration wants hundreds of billions, new powers ASAP to attack financial crisis
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Bush administration sketched out a multi-faceted effort on Friday to confront the worst U.S. financial crisis in decades, outlining a program that could cost taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars to buy up bad mortgages and other toxic debt that has unhinged Wall Street.
President Bush, flanked by Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, acknowledged that the program will put a “significant amount of taxpayers’ money on the line.”
The administration is asking Congress to give it sweeping new powers to execute the plan. Paulson said it “needs to be big enough to make a real difference and get to the heart of the problem.”
