The Lowest Common Denominator

I find it heartbreaking that so many in our country have come to the point of wanting a leader who has known and glaring weaknesses. It reminds me of some stories from history where cultures had degenerated morally. They were uncomfortable with people who held to a higher standard so they would support leaders who they perceived to be like them. This is the reason so many are calling Mitt Romney an empty suit. They do not trust anything he says for two reasons. First, they are dishonest themselves and expect others to be dishonest. I have read so many blogs and forum comments where people write that Romney is insincere. I have watched closely to try and see that myself but it is not there. He does have depth and intelligence and his personal history lacks “color”. His standards are so old-fashioned that many Americans cannot relate to it and are suspicious of it. His family life is a clear window to how he lives his life.
The second reason I believe he is not trusted is because he changed positions on abortion. This is called a flip-flop. He flipped but he did not flop. Reagan also changed positions on abortion. I was disappointed years ago to learn that although he did not support abortion, that he would not vote to over-turn Roe vs. Wade. I recently learned how his mother influenced him in that regard because of the death of his cousin from an abortion before it was legalized. After Romney studied the issue more closely when a stem-cell bill came to him, he realized that abortion was so evil that it needed to be handled politically.
There are so many lies that are told about him changing positions on the gay issue and gun control but he has not. He does not believe gays should be persecuted, neither do I. They should be treated with respect. He does, however, believe there should be an amendment that marriage should be between a man and a woman. On gun control, he has always been against fully automatic weapons, grenades and other such items, but supports the second amendment. The press and his opponents have been dishonest about him. His so called attacks on his opponents have always been handled with respect and have shown only carefully documented facts.
If we do not feel comfortable putting a man in office who is squeaky clean, what does that say about our future? After reading countless comments, I learned that an empty suit is someone who is not riddled with a murky past. If we do not have leaders we can look up to, we will spiral down to our lowest common denominator, and if that is a president, then his influence will drag this nation down until there are few positive values left.
