Hello, Gloria?
Posted by Terrie Soberg under: Presidential Election 2008; Talk Show Observations .
Rush Limbaugh discussed some excellent points on his talk show today. He read from a New York Post article on how Gloria Steinem made fun of John McCain’s imprisonment in Viet Nam, which is an acceptable attack. On the other hand, John McCain will not go after Obama so Rush wants Hillary to stay in the race so she can continue to dig up the dirt on Obama. Be sure to read the whole transcript of Rush’s interview for more insight into his thinking.
From today’s New York Post:
Steinem Mocks Mac’s POW Ordeal
One of Hillary Rodham Clinton’s best-known supporters, feminist author Gloria Steinem, belittled John McCain’s ordeal as a prisoner of war and the torture he endured as a captured Navy airman. “I mean, hello?” Steinem told a Texas crowd Saturday night as she was discussing McCain’s captivity by the Viet Cong.
“This is supposed to be a qualification to be president? I don’t think so,” The New York Observer quoted her as saying.
The red-faced Clinton campaign quickly denounced Steinem’s remarks.
“Senator Clinton has repeatedly praised Senator McCain’s courage and service to our country,” campaign spokesman Howard Wolfson said.
McCain senior adviser Mark Salter said that the Republican’s 5 1/2 years in captivity indeed made him more qualified to be commander-in-chief.
“Would you put your country before your own life? Check. Can you perform under great stress? Check. Does it test your courage? Check,” Salter said.
Excerpt from Laura Ingraham’s Interview of Rush Limbaugh for the O’Reilly Factor:INGRAHAM: Rush, I understand that the Rush Limbaugh audience is mobilizing in Texas for Hillary. Am I hearing that right?
RUSH: I don’t know if the audience is mobilizing or not. I am urging people — I am using a phrase, to Republicans. Our nominee is chosen. It’s John McCain. Texas is open. And I want Hillary to stay in this, Laura. This is too good a soap opera. We need Barack Obama bloodied up politically, and it’s obvious that the Republicans are not going to do it and don’t have the stomach for it, as you probably know. We’re getting all kinds of memos from the RNC, saying we’re not going to be critical there. Mark MacKinnon of McCain’s campaign says he’ll quit if they get critical over Obama. This is the presidency of the United States we’re talking about. I want our party to win. I want the Democrats to lose. They’re in the midst of tearing themselves apart right now. It is fascinating to watch, and it’s all going to stop if Hillary loses. So yeah, I’m asking people to cross over and, if they can stomach it — I know it’s a difficult thing to do, to vote for a Clinton, but it will sustain this soap opera, and it’s something I think we need. It would be fun, too.

I think this is excellent advice. Not only will it keep Hillary in the race and thereby “bloody up Obama politically,” the best thing that could happen is for Hillary Clinton to win. If she wins, she will probably lose the general. And if she wins in the General, that is better than Obama.
In fact I think that if she wins in the general, it will be best in the long run for the country. As we have discussed earlier, a McCain Victory in the general might spell the end of conservatism in the republican party.

I totally agree, Cave.

I really would prefer Hillary to McCain which is weird because I use to think she would be our worst nightmare.

This just makes people jump to support McCain more. Kind of stinks if he really was the turn coat a lot of his fellow POWs said he was.

I find it so fascinating that every day there are new twists and turns in the political scene. It would be very telling to be able to have an unbiased timeline of events to go back and look at so that we could see the big picture of what’s really happening.

Sean Hannity went on and on today about how brave McCain was to stay behind and not be released because his fellow soldiers couldn’t leave.

I just got off the phone with a sage old adviser of mine whose father was President of the LDS Church. We discussed the present political climate and our choices. His take:
We cannot afford four years of Hillary or Obama. The amount of damage done to our nation in taxes, security, defense, and to the Supreme Court could well be catastrophic. There is no guarantee that we can get it back four years from now with the machines these people have. He considers a defeatist attitude of “let’s just lose now and get it back later” will most likely backfire. We have to mobilize the Republican base to beat the democrats and work to get a majority in Congress to keep whoever wins honest.
As many of you know, I am not happy with McCain. In fact, I am very unhappy with this choice. But he is 75% of what I want. Obama is about 0%. I used to say, I don’t vote party first, I vote for the man. The past few elections, I have voted more for the party, because every conservative vote in the House and Senate overcomes the chance for a death blow by the Democrats. Every conservative in Congress makes it more difficult to dilute the Supreme Court.
Now, if it comes to it… when it comes to the Presidency, I will not be voting for a man… I will be voting for a party. I hate to say this here, because I know you all will jump down my neck, but Obama or Clinton will be a disaster, no question. Like my friend, said, sometimes you have to vote for who will do the least damage… especially with all the negatives we know about McCain.
I may be a grunt who just gets in line after all. But I will be a noisy grunt, and will work to get good support troops in the Congress. This is really tough.

I am not going to go for the defeatist attitude of giving in the RNC and voting for a liberal. I have studied this out and am going to trust myself on this. McCain’s voting record the last two years has been 63%, with only three Republicans lower than him. That isn’t 75%. But Chuck, you do what you have to do. You have seemed hot and cold about this so maybe you will finally be comfortable.

If McCain wins we lose more than if the others win. I totally agree with Ann Coulter. A republican congress would go along with MCain’s liberal bills. We would lose checks and balances, it would be a liberal cake walk. I kind of resent the defeatist attitude bit. We have all thought about this a lot and whatever someone chooses, they are doing it because they think they are doing right. I am not going to flip-flop because someone else tells me what to think. I agree with Saddened. I think for myself after carefully looking at every side. The sad thing is, McCain probably won’t win and what is coming will be blamed on those of us who don’t vote for him. Then people won’t find out how badly McCain would have betrayed his country.
Chuck C Says:

OK. 63% to 0%. I am hot and cold on this, but this is a hard choice.
I remember how I felt when it was suggested that if Ron Paul lost the primaries he might run on a 3rd party ticket and split the conservative vote. If the Dems were to get in because of his efforts we would all have been upset. The question is, can McCain ruin the party? Perhaps you feel he can and will, but we need to be in the party to fix the party. Giving up on it will not. I feel we need to let our disgust be heard loud and clear and that we will not be moved.
We have had more than a few miscreants in the White House and survived. I don’t know if we can survive an Obama. We may have a chance with one of the stupidest guys ever to come out of the Naval Academy. The question is… do we fight from within or without?

It would be good if this blog would be welcoming to people who wanted to vote for McCain, or whoever else. I know Chuck is conservative so he will just work on things from a different angle but he hasn’t become a liberal. Some people here are going to vote for Obama and that’s okay because they have their own reasons for doing it and we shouldn’t judge. What we can all still do all we can to fight for the constitution.
Chuck C Says:
3 March 2008 at 11:16 pm.
If we let a Republican Congress go along with liberal bills, then we are a weak citizenry! We have checks and balances in this system and we are the ultimate balance. I don’t know if we have four years to give up. I don’t believe we have to lose everything.
It is defeatist to want a liberal democrat in the White House, especially the most liberal who has ever run. Higher taxes, socialized medicine, weakened Supreme Court. We may lose more in those four to eight years than we can ever get back.
Hank Says:
3 March 2008 at 11:25 pm.
So are you people suppose to follow what your church president says to do about political choices? That kind of surprises me.
Chuck C Says:
3 March 2008 at 11:31 pm.
He is not my church leader, but is someone whose experience I respect. His father, Ezra Taft Benson, was very conservative, but has been gone for many years. I did not ask his opinion based upon any religious background, nor did I ask him to prophesy for me. I do respect his experience and background, as he has been working for conservative causes for decades.
Ghost Says:

No it is defeatist to want a dishonest liberal republican traitor who will betray us completely. And no Hank, Mormon leaders don’t tell us how to vote. That is completely personal and we are expected to use our own brains and make our own decisions. In fact, I believe we are held accountable for our vote and I will not knowingly vote for pure evil.
E.E. Says:
3 March 2008 at 11:35 pm.
Kind of strong words, Ghost but I understand you are upset. I tried to be a peace maker and I do believe we should welcome McCain supporters but for Chuck to come back after reading comments saying it is offensive to be called a defeatist, and then do it again even stronger? That was just plain arrogant and rude.
I am LDS and I know good members I respect who differ from Brother Benson. I will make up my own mind thank you.

Chuck C Says:

With Nancy Pelosi and Dirty Harry Reid (a good Mormon) pulling the strings along with Obama…. how much worse can it get?
Ghost Says:

I won’t be accountable for voting for McCain or Hillary, or Obama. I will write in the name of a person I believe is honest.
E.E. Says:

I will be writing in the name of an honest man, Mitt Romney. That’s a vote I can live with.
E.E. Says:

I kind of thought it strange that you would say if we let a republican congress go along with liberal bills…it has been awhile since they listened to the people. Why would they start now?
Chuck C Says:
3 March 2008 at 11:49 pm.
I believe that is better than voting for Obama, and makes good sense, just to show your discontent, and allow you to remain true to your principals. But the primary is to see who will represent us in the general. Mitt lost, and has graciously backed McCain. Do you believe Mitt will now turn his back on his principals? Don’t you think he will be working to get McCain to straighten up? Will he succeed? I don’t know if he can.
Chuck C Says:

They listened to the people regarding the (McCain) immigration bill. There IS power in the people.
Chuck C Says:
3 March 2008 at 11:52 pm.
In regards to a Congress that does not listen to the people. That is what we have to work on. Getting representatives who will.
Chuck C Says:
3 March 2008 at 11:55 pm.
E.E., how did your congressman or senator respond last time you contacted him regarding a certain bill. Did they send you back a form letter, or did they ignore you completely? My last responses were a letter last week from Senator Hatch, and a postcard from my representative. At least they are responding.
E.E. Says:
3 March 2008 at 11:55 pm.
Mitt hasn’t been out stumping for McCain. All the experts have said Mitt has to support McCain or he is finished and he knows this. I actually am not certain he would have backed McCain otherwise. Mitt knows what a liar he is.
It doesn’t matter with most congressmen what they say when they run. When the arms are twisted by the Republican Establishment, they will jump right in line. Yes we still have to try our best but I agree with Ghost that Ann Coulter has nailed the problem. Our party would be moving left and this would be compromising to me.

I decided to talk to my wife about this. She is a brilliant girl and I wanted to make sure she didn’t feel she had to agree with me. I’m really okay with people who think differently as long as I know they are sincere in their feelings. Anyway, we talked for awhile and she told me that there was no way that she could personally cast a vote for someone who she was certain was a Gadianton Robber. We’ve both read enough to be sure in our own hearts of this. We don’t expect others to believe us and that’s okay, this is personal. Some people might decide that voting for one Gadianton Robber over another that doesn’t seem quite as bad is all right. Fine, no problem.
