Faith in the Holy One of Israel
Some excerpts from this address have already been posted but this short video clip from Neal Maxwell’s speech at BYU in 1978 adds some additional segments. Juxtaposed with images of today, this is a compelling presentation that helps us understand what is happening today, including the dangers of secular “religion.”
Neal A. Maxwell: “Meeting the Challenges of Today”
(A note for our friends who are not LDS: Lehi, who is mentioned in this video clip, was the Book of Mormon prophet who was commanded to take his family into the wilderness to escape the destruction that would be coming upon because the people would not repent. In his vision of the Tree of Life he saw many people pressing forward to the tree which represented the love of God to partake of its delicious fruit. Only those who held fast to the iron rod were able to make it safely through the dark mists of temptation to the tree. Because of the mocking of those in the high and spacious building, a building which represented the pride of the world and had no foundation, many were ashamed and let go of the rod.
I love this promise and believe the righteous of all faiths will be blessed for their faith and committment:
“But, behold, the righteous, the saints of the Holy One of Israel, they who have BELIEVED in the Holy One of Israel, they who have ENDURED the crosses of the world, and DESPISED THE SHAME OF IT, they shall inherit the kingdom of God, which was prepared for them from the foundation of the world, and THEIR JOY SHALL BE FULL FOREVER.” (2 Nephi 9:18)
