A SPECIAL DAY FOR MOTHERS

I got married when I was 18, and shortly before I turned 20 I became the mother of a sweet baby girl. Our ninth child was born twenty seven years later (even though a couple of times we thought our family was complete). Our youngest will turn 15 this week. Now, that is a lot of years of mothering. We didn’t start out planning to have a large family, but each of our children was so fun and brought so much joy that we were happy to add to our family. Of course, there were times of exasperation and exhaustion. One time I estimated the number of diapers I had changed and the number of birthday cakes I had made. Just thinking about that made me tired all over again, but it also brought back many wonderful memories.

Being a mother is both challenging and rewarding, AND it is important. What an opportunity and responsibility it is to nurture, love, and teach those children who come to us so pure and helpless, but with such great potential. E.T. Sullivan once said,
“We fancy that God can only manage his world with battalions, when all the while he is doing it with beautiful babies. When a wrong wants righting, or a truth wants preaching, or a continent needs opening, God sends a baby into the world…perhaps in a simple home and of some obscure mother. And then God puts the idea into the mother’s heart, and she puts it into the baby’s mind. And then God waits. The greatest forces in the world are not the earthquakes and the thunderbolts. The greatest forces in the world are babies.”
This day, I hope that God will put into every mother’s heart the understanding of how important she is and bless her with wisdom, strength, and happiness. I hope that each of us will honor our mothers for all they have done to bless our lives.
HAPPY MOTHERS’ DAY!
