(I apologize that my Sunday blog was not posted last week. I chose to share a video that created some posting problems. Perhaps those issues can be resolved and it can be used another week, but in the meantime thank you for your continued interest in ingodwetrustblog.com. Blessings, Sharon A.)
Building Family Unity
As the economy breaks down,society continues to disintegrate, and uncertainties increase, it is more important than ever before that we draw our families together in love and unity. Here is a simple poem that I committed to memory many years ago.

THE FAMILY
The family is like a book–
The children are the leaves;
The parents are the cover, that
Protecting beauty gives.
At first the pages of the book
Are blank and purely fair;
But time soon writeth memories,
And painteth pictures there.
Love is the golden clasp
That bindeth up the trust;
Oh, break it not lest the leaves
Should scatter and be lost.

I hope that love is felt by each member of our families and that the memories that we are writing are happy ones. The Proclamation on the Family states that “Happiness in family life is most likely to be achieved when founded upon the teaching of the Lord Jesus Christ. Successful marriages and families are established and maintained on principles of faith, prayer, repentance, forgiveness, respect, love, compassion, work, and wholesome recreational activities.” http://www.lds.org/library/display/0,4945,161-1-11-1,00.html
We would do well to consider what we might do to strengthen our families in the Lord. We can pray to know what changes we need to make in our personal lives and in our families and then follow the whisperings of the Spirit which will teach us what we need to do. We can move forward by making seemingly small improvements that can often make big differences in our families.

In April 2008, Thomas S. Monson encouraged us to “demonstrate kindness and love within our own families.” He continued, “Our homes are to be more than sanctuaries; they should also be places where God’s Spirit can dwell, where the storm stops a the door, where love reigns and peace dwells. The world can at times be a frightening place in which to live. The moral fabric of society seems to be unraveling at an alarming speed. None. .. is exempt from exposure to those things which have the ;potential to drag us down and destroy us…but we need not despair…Our Father in Heaven has given us the tools we need…He is at the helm. We have nothing to fear. He is the God of light. He is the God of hope. I testify that He loves us–each one.”
