Zimbabwe’s Mugabe refuses to bow to world pressure
By ANGUS SHAW, Associated Press Writer 1 hour, 9 minutes ago
HARARE, Zimbabwe – Saying the world can “shout as loud as they like,” President Robert Mugabe refused to give into pressure from Africa and the West and vowed to go ahead with this week’s runoff election, even though his opponent quit the race.
South Africa’s ruling party issued a toughly worded statement Tuesday calling on Mugabe’s government to stop “riding roughshod” over the opposition headed by Morgan Tsvangirai, who quit the presidential contest and sought shelter in the Dutch Embassy.
The African National Congress also warned against international intervention following a report in the Times of London that Britain has drawn up contingency plans for deploying troops in Zimbabwe to resolve a humanitarian crisis and to evacuate British nationals and their dependents.
“A lasting solution has to be led by the Zimbabweans and any attempts by outside players to impose regime change will merely deepen the crisis,” the ANC said.
It singled out Britain, the colonial power when Zimbabwe was still Rhodesia, saying it had not followed through on pledges to help fund efforts to put more land in the hands of black Zimbabweans. Britain has cited concerns about corruption.
Campaigning Tuesday, Mugabe was defiant a day after the U.N. Security Council voted unanimously to issue a strongly worded statement condemning violence against the opposition and saying it made a fair poll impossible. The statement won support from South Africa, China and Russia, which have previously blocked such moves.

I questioned this weird story yesterday. It seems unlikely that a soldier would do something like that under those circumstances. I’m glad there will be an investigation.
Israel investigates security scare at Sarkozy departure
Israeli authorities on Wednesday were investigating the apparent suicide death of a policeman which stirred a security scare during French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s departure ceremony.
A police spokesman confirmed an investigation had been launched into the death of Raed Ranen, 32, who seemingly shot himself while standing guard during the ceremony at Ben Gurion airport near Tel Aviv on Tuesday.
Authorities believe Ranen committed suicide, a version rejected by the man’s family.
After the shot that killed Ranen rang out, bodyguards rushed Sarkozy and first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy to their plane, while security officials whisked Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and President Shimon Peres into their armoured cars.
Once it became evident there was no security risk, Olmert and Peres boarded the plane to bid farewell to Sarkozy, who had spent three days in Israel and the occupied West Bank.
The policeman’s brother Nayef made it clear he didn’t believe in the suicide theory.
“He had no reason to take his own life. It may have been an accident or he was unwittingly killed by another Israeli guard,” the Ynet news website quoted him as saying.
His father Assad said his son was in good spirits when he left home to join his unit on Tuesday.

GOOD NEWS! In yesterday’s Utah Republican primary election, Jason Chaffetz defeated incumbent Chris Cannon in a race for Utah’s third Congressional District! Less than 11% of the registered voters went to the polls and gave Chaffetz the victory by a margin of almost 20 percent. (59.06% to 40.94%) Perhaps Cannon’s supporters were too complacent or over-confident and just didn’t show up or MAYBE Utahns finally woke up to the fact that Cannon has not been promoting the best interests of the state or the nation (eg. compromising our sovereignty by supporting NAFTA, CAFTA, and the North American Union, increasing the power of the federal government by supporting No Child Left Behind, and welcoming illegal aliens to Utah at the expense of Utah tax payers). The support of Utah’s biggest and biased news media (Chris’s brother is editor of one of the state’s largest newspapers), Chris’s senoirity, and the over $600,000 spent on his campaign were not enough to win him a return ticket to Washington.
If this can happen in Utah, maybe voters in other areas of the country wake up and begin to see what has been happening! We don’t need to give up. We can focus our attention and energy on state and local politics, since we aren’t given real choices in the Presidential election.

It would be really nice if the people in Illinois could wake up and vote Rod Blagojevich and his counter partners out of office. Illinois is also the home of Obama.
Geez … no wonder the state is falling apart.

I hope you still read the mission statement and watch our theme song every now and then. I just did. The video is good for a pick me up whenever you need one.

I just dropped in to report on Cannon losing. But you all beat me to it by a long shot. Chaffetz is supposed to come up with some immigration reform. Hopefully it is true.

Last chance to buy Cheerios.
Due to floods we have lost 72% of next year’s seed corn crop. As a result, Quaker Oats has closed indefinitely due to huge silos of grain destroyed by floodwaters. General Mills won’t be producing for a long time. Cargill’s huge grain storage bins have been lost and the railroad in and out has been lost. Archer Daniels Midland – the world’s largest agricultural processors of soybeans, corn, wheat and cocoa is totally under water. If you can stock up on cereals and anything made from corn, wheat and soybeans do so
Thanks Peter Anderson for the heads up.

Sharon, thank you for an exciting news! We already have some strong actions against the Republican elites here in Idaho a couple of weeks ago, by booting out the state party chairperson, who is actually a RINO, and replaced him with a solid conservative! The conservative movement is arising everywhere. Unfortunately, this movement is too late to do something about the party’s current presidential nominee.

Bryon, is that for real? Quaker Oats being shut down? May you please provide the link?

Sorry SGS but Peter Anderson did not provide a link to anything.

20 people killed in Mexican border city
CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico (AP) – Police say 20 people have been killed in less than three days in this crime-ridden border city’s latest wave of violence.
State police spokesman Cesar Ramirez says a father and son who were killed at their home while sleeping were among the victims. A third victim was a man whose body was cut up in pieces and dumped in an empty lot.
Ramirez says that this year alone more than 500 people have been killed in Ciudad Juarez, across the border from El Paso, Texas. The city is home to the powerful Juarez drug cartel and has been among the hardest-hit cities in an explosion of violence across Mexico.
President Felipe Calderon has deployed 25,000 troops across the country to wrest territory from drug gangs, which have fought back with bold attacks.

Umm, it does not look like Quaker is in any danger, as of June 14th:
Fortunately for Quaker, its main distribution center in Cedar Rapids is in a considerably drier part of town, Mueller said. “We don’t anticipate any major impact on our inventory or supply at this point.”
Bryon, I do not see any more recent article than this one.
