Divided We Fall

Although Sean and Pat disagree on a few issues, Sean did a good job of sticking to the things they both agreed on and that is that
I believe that Americans on both side of the spectrum agree that there is serious disunity, although each side would cite different reasons for the danger we are facing. Some of what Mr. Buchanan wrote will strike a chord with liberals, for instance, we are giving up a part of our freedom for perceived freedoms. Pat warns us of the dangers of creating a climate of fear that engenders power grabs of our basic rights. He says that the threat of terrorism is causing us to surrender our liberties. Conservatives may be more in agreement with Pat’s statement that we know little about our founding fathers and cites this as a perilous trend. He also warns of the dumbing down of our entire culture.
Day of Reckoning is filled with strong words regarding what Buchanan calls, “a storm of crisis”, which includes; the weak dollar, war, border security issues, and the loss of domestic manufacturing. The greatest threat of all, he states, is the loss of our common culture, a common belief and an emphasis on things that divide us and not what unite us.
Buchanan quoted statistics to what he sees as the central problem, an illegal invasion of our nation. He said that 58% of Hispanic illegals believe our Southwest belongs to them. Sadly, 72% believe that Americans are racist. I know there are a lot of racists left in our country but I truly believe it is a much smaller minority than is perceived by our Hispanic friends. The book goes on to discuss “the perfect storm”, which is the fiscal crisis in Washington D.C. Pat believes we are reaching the limits of our resources. When discussing economics, Sean asked Pat about being labeled an isolationist. I have followed Mr. Buchanan for years and I know he is not waffling when he refutes that label. He has simply wanted the playing field evened out. He knows, as do I from a great deal of research, that our country has given unfair trading leverage to other countries to the detriment of our own industries, and that we have encouraged and subsidized, through large tax breaks, American big business moving jobs off shore.
