BOSTON — Mitt Romney doesn’t have a job, for the first time in his adult life. That hardly means he’s not working.

In ways both subtle and overt, the 2008 Republican presidential contender, former Massachusetts governor, one-time Olympics chief and high-flying businessman is building toward a 2012 White House campaign by judiciously engaging and disengaging with the national debate.

Today, he’s in Chicago to speak at a fundraiser for a prospective state treasurer candidate. On Wednesday, he’s in Washington to headline a fundraiser for the National Republican Senatorial Committee. On Thursday, he’s again the keynote speaker at a fundraising dinner for Republicans in New York City.

After that, he’s heading back to his oceanfront home in La Jolla, Calif., to continue writing newspaper columns and a political book. Based on the ’60s tome “The American Challenge” by Frenchman Jean-Jacques Servan-Schreiber, it will be aimed at shaking American economic and political complacency, he said. . .

Republican strategist Mary Matalin says she can easily see a second campaign — and a more successful one, at that.

“There’s nothing like going around the track once to broaden the field,” Matalin said. “He has an intellectual base. He has a politics-faith base. He certainly has an economic base. If there’s anything illogical about it, it’s that he — and not some of the other people who may appeal more strongly to one of those elements — has the greatest potential to pull all those factions together.”

A year ago, Romney was little more than one of the 10 vanquished contenders on the road to the Republican presidential nomination. McCain won after an especially nasty Florida battle with Romney.

Yet rather than wallowing in defeat, Romney re-engaged. He dispatched his top fundraisers to McCain’s cause, and he urged former business colleague Meg Whitman, once the chief executive of eBay, to sign on as a senior McCain adviser.

Yesterday we celebrated an historic event–the inauguration of the first African-American president of the United States. Now the celebration is over and the agenda goes forward, full-force. I respect the office of the President.

I do not expect to agree with this man.

I received the following email from Family Leader and I am horrified, but not surprised at its contents:

The White House has already updated the government site outlining President Obama’s plans for the future and they deeply affect family, marriage and religious freedom.

Each specific area regarding social issues can be found here:

The Agenda: Civil Rights: www.whitehouse.gov/agenda/civil_rights

The Agenda: Women: www.whitehouse.gov/agenda/women/

The Agenda: Family:www.whitehouse.gov/agenda/family/

The Agenda: Education: www.whitehouse.gov/agenda/education/

Here are some excerpts:

Early Childhood Education

Zero to Five Plan: The Obama-Biden comprehensive “Zero to Five” plan will provide critical support to young children and their parents. Unlike other early childhood education plans, the Obama-Biden plan places key emphasis at early care and education for infants, which is essential for children to be ready to enter kindergarten. Obama and Biden will create Early Learning Challenge Grants to promote state Zero to Five efforts and help states move toward voluntary, universal pre-school. [The government wants to educate our babies and make us pay for universal pre-school?]

Civil Rights

Support Full Civil Unions and Federal Rights for LGBT Couples: President Obama supports full civil unions that give same-sex couples legal rights and privileges equal to those of married couples. Obama also believes we need to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act and enact legislation that would ensure that the 1,100+ federal legal rights and benefits currently provided on the basis of marital status are extended to same-sex couples in civil unions and other legally-recognized unions. These rights and benefits include the right to assist a loved one in times of emergency, the right to equal health insurance and other employment benefits, and property rights.

Oppose a Constitutional Ban on Same-Sex Marriage: President Obama voted against the Federal Marriage Amendment in 2006 which would have defined marriage as between a man and a woman and prevented judicial extension of marriage-like rights to same-sex or other unmarried couples.

Expand Hate Crimes Statutes: In 2004, crimes against LGBT Americans constituted the third-highest category of hate crime reported and made up more than 15 percent of such crimes. President Obama cosponsored legislation that would expand federal jurisdiction to include violent hate crimes perpetrated because of race, color, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, or physical disability. As a state senator, President Obama passed tough legislation that made hate crimes and conspiracy to commit them against the law. [Both Hate Crimes and ENDA (Employment Non-discrimination Act) laws impact religious freedom.]

Fight Workplace Discrimination: President Obama supports the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, and believes that our anti-discrimination employment laws should be expanded to include sexual orientation and gender identity. While an increasing number of employers have extended benefits to their employees’ domestic partners, discrimination based on sexual orientation in the workplace occurs with no federal legal remedy. The President also sponsored legislation in the Illinois State Senate that would ban employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.

Repeal Don’t Ask-Don’t Tell: President Obama agrees with former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff John Shalikashvili and other military experts that we need to repeal the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. The key test for military service should be patriotism, a sense of duty, and a willingness to serve. Discrimination should be prohibited. The U.S. government has spent millions of dollars replacing troops kicked out of the military because of their sexual orientation. Additionally, more than 300 language experts have been fired under this policy, including more than 50 who are fluent in Arabic. The President will work with military leaders to repeal the current policy and ensure it helps accomplish our national defense goals.

Expand Adoption Rights: President Obama believes that we must ensure adoption rights for all couples and individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation. He thinks that a child will benefit from a healthy and loving home, whether the parents are gay or not. [We will be putting children in a position where they do not have the right to a mother and father. What does this mean for religious adoption agencies?]

Promote AIDS Prevention: In the first year of his presidency, President Obama will develop and begin to implement a comprehensive national HIV/AIDS strategy that includes all federal agencies. The strategy will be designed to reduce HIV infections, increase access to care and reduce HIV-related health disparities. The President will support common sense approaches including age-appropriate sex education that includes information about contraception, combating infection within our prison population through education and contraception, and distributing contraceptives through our public health system. The President also supports lifting the federal ban on needle exchange, which could dramatically reduce rates of infection among drug users. President Obama has also been willing to confront the stigma – too often tied to homophobia – that continues to surround HIV/AIDS.

Reproductive Choice

Supports a Woman’s Right to Choose: President Obama understands that abortion is a divisive issue, and respects those who disagree with him. However, he has been a consistent champion of reproductive choice and will make preserving women’s rights under Roe v. Wade a priority in his Adminstration. He opposes any constitutional amendment to overturn the Supreme Court’s decision in that case.

Preventing Unintended Pregnancy: President Obama was an original co-sponsor of legislation to expand access to contraception, health information, and preventive services to help reduce unintended pregnancies. Introduced in January 2007, the Prevention First Act will increase funding for family planning and comprehensive sex education that teaches both abstinence and safe sex methods. The Act will also end insurance discrimination against contraception, improve awareness about emergency contraception, and provide compassionate assistance to rape victims.

Obama Officials Confirm He Will Fund Foreign Abortions Starting WednesdayObama Officials Confirm He Will Fund Foreign Abortions Starting Wednesday

Officials with the incoming administration of Barack Obama have confirmed that he will indeed overturn a pro-life policy of President Bush on his first day in office. Despite campaigning on the rhetoric of wanting to reduce abortions, Obama will make one of his first actions promoting them globally.

Meanwhile, some 77 members of Congress have signed onto a letter asking Obama to back down from doing so.

President Bush used an executive order on his first day in office to reinstitute a pro-life policy that prevents forcing taxpayers to fund international groups that perform or promote abortions in other countries.

While U.S. law prohibits funding abortions directly, Bush’s Mexico City Policy expands the law by also prohibiting the funding of pro-abortion groups that either do abortions overseas or lobby pro-life governments to sacrifice their abortion limits.

During the presidential election, pro-life groups issued a clarion call to voters telling them their tax money would be used if Obama were elected and saying he would likely reverse the Mexico City Policy immediately after taking office.

The capital publication Congressional Quarterly reports that top Washington officials tell it that the incoming president will reverse the pro-life measure on his first day as president, on Wednesday.

Although I am very sorry that our nation has turned left, I do want to take this opportunity today to congratulate our new president. He fought hard and won a tough race. I have always wanted to see a black person as president of the United States. That fact is something I can appreciate.

That said, I am also very sorry that instead of becoming color blind, the country seems to be more color conscious than ever. Yes, we elected a black (half) president. Could we now stop labeling the whites as evil and full of hate? The words from Reverend Joseph Lowery in what was called a prayer, but was actually a speech, were troubling. He said:

Benediction at Obama ’s inauguration, Rev. Joseph Lowery: ‘Lord, in the memory of all the saints who from their labors rest, and in the joy of a new beginning, we ask you to help us work for that day when black will not be asked to get in back, when brown can stick around… when the red man can get ahead, man; and when white will embrace what is right. That all those who do justice and love mercy say Amen. Say Amen’…

Reverend Lowery, that was offensive. Without the white vote, Barack Obama would not be president right now. I couldn’t help but wonder if the reverend was focusing on speaking to God and was addressing those words to Him, as prayers are supposed to do? Or was he speaking to us…lecturing us?

Also, I am very sorry that jeers and disrespect was shown to President Bush by the crowd today. Graciousness is hard to find these days. Although I disagreed with some of the things that President Bush did, I always believed that he did what he felt was right. I wish him all the best in his future endeavors.

The main stream media have been silent on this issue, and I expect that Obama will be inaugurated without ever proving his Constitutional eligibility for this office.

Now some maintain that, according to Article 1 Section 6 of the Constitution, Hillary Clinton is ineligible to serve as Secretary of State. A spokesman for Mrs. Clinton states that “. . . putting frivolous lawsuits by fringe groups aside, this issue has been resolved many times over the past century involving both Democratic and Republican appointments and we’re confident it will be here too.” It will be interesting to see if the effort is even made to reduce the salaries in question thus making it appear that the Constitution is being followed, or if this issue, too, will be ignored.

Apparently Reines believes those who take the Constitution seriously “are fringe groups.” Can we believe that those who will swear to uphold and defend the Constitution in January even understand and respect what this founding document says, or will they further shred it in favor of political expediency? How many Americans will even ask such “frivolous” questions?

The issue may seem esoteric but it generated attention Tuesday among legal scholars and bloggers arguing over whether it would be unconstitutional for Mrs. Clinton to serve as President-elect Barack Obama’s secretary of state because the salary for her new office was increased while she served in the Senate.

Judicial Watch, a watchdog group that made a name for itself investigating the Clinton administration in the 1990s, raised the matter Tuesday with a statement asserting that Mrs. Clinton was ineligible to become secretary of state because of the so-called “Emoluments Clause” of the Constitution. By the end of the day, Senator Harry M. Reid of Nevada, the Democratic majority leader, was consulting with Republican colleagues in hopes of putting together a bill to address the issue.
The issue stems from Article I, Section 6, of the Constitution, which says: “No Senator or Representative shall, during the Time for which he was elected, be appointed to any civil Office under the Authority of the United States which shall have been created, or the Emoluments whereof shall have been increased during such time.” Emoluments refers to compensation.

After Mrs. Clinton’s last Senate election in 2006, the salary for secretary of state and other cabinet positions was increased to $191,300 from $186,600. In the past, Congress has gotten around this by passing a resolution cutting the salary for the office at stake back to what it was before the nominee’s most recent election. . . .

“There’s no getting around the Constitution’s Ineligibility Clause, so Hillary Clinton is prohibited from serving in the Cabinet until at least 2013, when her current term expires,” said Tom Fitton, president of Judicial Watch. “Barack Obama should select someone who is eligible for the position of secretary of state and save the country from a constitutional battle over Hillary Clinton’s confirmation.”

Damn the Economy! Full Taxation Ahead!

By Jon Coupal

These are creepy times for taxpayers — the creepiest in memory.
Between the state and local ballots, there are hundreds of measures
that would increase the burden on taxpayers. If all or most of these
tax increases and bonds pass, it will be Halloween every day as
taxpayers are compelled to dole out big dollar treats to our
political class.

Much of the cause of this tsunami of tax increase proposals is due
to the Obama phenomenon. Political consultants have told their
clients in government that this is an ideal time to put tax measures
on the ballot because the presidential candidate is driving
low-income voters to the polls who will be inclined to support
higher taxes for those they see as more prosperous than themselves.

Cynical politicians have gleefully taken the advice, and are
proceeding with a policy that can best be summed up as — with
apologies to Admiral Farragut — ‘Damn the economy! Full taxation
ahead!’ How else can they ignore the fact that our state is in a
recession and taxpayers are in a vice?

Unemployment is at 7.7 percent, and predictions are that it will go
up from here. The home foreclosure rate is setting records, and we
continue to see an out-migration of citizens according to the State
Department of Finance. And California already rates sixth in the
nation in tax burden.

The Wall Street meltdown is threatening the savings of many and
threatening those already retired. Additionally, CalPERS and other
funds that provide for public employee retirement have lost, in some
cases, as much as 25 percent of their value over the past year.

The chickens are coming home to roost. Bad judgment by elected
officials who agreed to contracts with public employee unions based
on unrealistic projections of economic growth is resulting in
billions of new obligations for already stressed taxpayers who now
must guarantee a secure retirement for government workers as their
own fortunes sink.

Adding to the uncertainty is the possibility that if Barack Obama is
elected president there will be arguments out of Washington that
anyone who is already paying income taxes is ‘rich’ and should be
prepared to contribute to the welfare of those who pay no taxes.

Unfortunately, in spite of our dire circumstances, California’s
airwaves are being saturated with false advertising portraying state
bond measures as benefiting the economy or as having no impact on
taxes. Propositions 1A, 3 and 10 would result in $32 billion in
additional debt, including interest, which must be paid from the
general fund. This means that there will be less for other important
state programs. Powerful interests supporting education,
transportation and law enforcement will not sit idly by while their
budgets are cut to pay off bonded indebtedness, which is so high –
even without this new borrowing — that Wall Street considers
California a poor credit risk. The clamoring for new tax increases
will be deafening.

So, in a way, this election is the opposite of Halloween. Instead of
innocent children wearing spooky costumes, those knocking on
taxpayers’ doors are tax increase monsters trying to look benign by
hiding behind false images of children, a green economy and high
speed transportation for all.

Taxpayers would be wise not to open the door.

Jon Coupal is President of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association
– California’s largest taxpayer organization — which is dedicated
to the protection of Proposition 13 and promoting taxpayers’ rights.

The London Telegraph has a disturbing article today I thought we should see. Globalism has long been promoted as a capitalist venture. My college history professor, one of the most brilliant academics I’ve known, told me there was tremendous infighting among the globalists. On one side is big business and on the other side are pure socialists. They both want a one world government but for different reasons. What has been happening is that the socialists have been labeling globalism as a capitalist disaster and want to come in and clean up the situation. The reality is that they want the same global control but will say it is for the good of the common man and not business. Of course, they want to be the fat cats that sit atop the pile with power to control the dumb masses. Different puppet master, same loss of freedoms.

Revenge of the Left across the world

Whatever the exact result of the US elections tomorrow, we must assume that the whole governing machinery of Washington and the state capitols will soon be hostile to laissez-faire thinking.

By Ambrose Evans-Pritchard

It is not just that the Democrats will win a crushing victory in both houses of Congress, perhaps reaching the 60-seat Senate threshold that lets them steam-roll legislation. It is also that the incoming class of 2008 is of a new creed. Many no longer believe – or actively reject – the free trade and free market catechisms.

As commentator Markos Moulitsas put it in Newsweek: “The big question is, will Democrats nationwide simply ‘win’ the night–or will they deliver an electoral drubbing so thorough that it signals the utter rejection of conservative ideology and kills the notion that America is a ‘center-right’ country?” he said….

But at this point I have given up hoping that we will draw the right conclusions from this crisis. The universal verdict is that capitalism has run amok.In any case the damage caused as credit retrenchment squeezes real industry is likely to be so great that Barack Obama may have to pursue unthinkable policies, just as Franklin Roosevelt had to ditch campaign orthodoxies and go truly radical after his landslide victory in 1932. Indeed, Mr Obama – if he wins – may have to start by nationalizing the US car industry.

For those who missed it, I recommend Edward Stourton’s BBC interview with Eric Hobsbawm, the doyen of Marxist history.

“This is the dramatic equivalent of the collapse of the Soviet Union: we now know that an era has ended,” said Mr Hobsbawm, still lucid at 91.

“It is certainly greatest crisis of capitalism since the 1930s. As Marx and Schumpeter foresaw, globalization not only destroys heritage, but is incredibly unstable. It operates through a series of crises.

“There’ll be a much greater role for the state, one way or another. We’ve already got the state as lender of last resort, we might well return to idea of the state as employer of last resort, which is what it was under FDR. It’ll be something which orients, and even directs the private economy,” he said.

Dismiss this as the wishful thinking of an old Marxist if you want, but I suspect his views may be closer to the truth than the complacent assumptions so prevalent in the City.

Who thinks that the three key Commission posts – single market, competition, and trade – will still be held by free marketeers when the new team comes in next year?…

European and UK banks are five times more exposed to emerging markets than US banks. They alone hold the collective time-bomb of $1.6 trillion (£990bn) in hard currency loans to Eastern Europe – now starting to detonate in Hungary, Ukraine, Romania, and even Russia. At some point, Europe’s political class will face the awful truth that their own credit bubbles are just as bad – and perhaps worse – than the excesses of US sub-prime property. As that occurs, the shock will move by degrees from revulsion to political rage.

…America was the great exception, as it may prove to be again. I for one will take the enlightened “socialism” of Barack Obama any day over the Hegelian broth nearing the boil in Europe.

The election is only two days away. We have no good choices–only the lesser of two evils and who can really say what that is? Our Constitution is in jeopardy. We were warned to prepare for that day. Glenn Beck has been begging people who listen to his national radio show to learn about the Constitution. He recommends W. Cleon Skousen’s book “The 5000 Year Leap” and I also endorse that book. The following is an excerpt from a talk given by President Ezra Taft Benson of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. President Benson knew much about our Constitution and the dangers it would face. His book, “An Enemy Hath Done This” is also a good one to read. Now, please read this excerpt, and then stand up and do SOMETHING to save this great nation of ours. For the entire talk, see http://speeches.byu.edu/reader/reader.php?id=6019.

Christ Gave Us the Constitution

Fifth, in addition to the gifts of the life of Christ, his prophet, his church, and the Book of Mormon is the gift of his Constitution. The Lord said, “I established the Constitution of this land, by the hands of wise men whom I raised up” (D&C 101:80). Among the opening words of his dedicatory prayer at the Washington Temple, President Kimball referred to our inspired Constitution.

The elders of this Church have a prophetic mission yet to perform so far as the Constitution is concerned. In a discourse on July 19, 1840, Joseph Smith said, “Even this nation will be on the very verge of crumbling to pieces and tumbling to the ground, and when the Constitution is upon the brink of ruin, this people will be the staff upon which the nation shall lean, and they shall bear the Constitution away from the very verge of destruction” (M8d 155, Bx4, Joseph Smith, Church Historian’s Library).

Now, how are the elders going to prepare for that mission? How are they going to know what the Constitution is, so they will know when it is on the brink of ruin? In many of the law schools of today you will hear that the Constitution is whatever the Supreme Court says it is. Could it be that the Supreme Court, which President McKay said is leading this nation down the road to atheism, is the agency to tell us what this divine document is (David O. McKay, Church News, 22 June 1963; Jerreld Newquist, comp., Prophets, Principles, and National Survival, pp. 187–88)? Can we learn best how to preserve it by studying what it is at the hands of some of those who are seeking to destroy it?

But President McKay had a better approach when he encouraged us to support good and conscientious candidates who are truly dedicated to the Constitution in the tradition of our founding fathers. They are the ones the Lord referred to as wise men. It is to them, the Lord, and his prophets that we should go to determine what the Constitution is. There must have been a tradition of our founding fathers, or President McKay would not have referred to it. (One of the best books on this subject was written by Clarence Carson, entitled The American Tradition, distributed by The Foundation for Economic Education at Irvington-on-Hudson, New York. President J. Reuben Clark served on their board of trustees for some time. I now have the honor of so serving.) To the Lord, his prophets, and the founding fathers we must go to learn of this divine document so that our efforts will be to preserve and not to destroy the Constitution.

The Prophet Joseph Smith said in a great discourse in Nauvoo on February 7, 1844, “Were I the president of the United States . . . I would honor the old paths of the venerated fathers of freedom; I would walk in the tracks of the illustrious patriots who carried the ark of the Government upon their shoulders with an eye single to the glory of the people” (History of the Church, 6:208).

Said President George Albert Smith, “I am saying to you that to me the Constitution of the United States of America is just as much from my Heavenly Father as the Ten Commandments. When that is my feeling I am not going to go very far away from the Constitution and I am going to try to keep it where the Lord started it, and not let anti-Christ come into this country” (Conference Report, April 1948, p. 182).

And speaking of anti-Christ, I would like to tell you, if you want to get some idea of how we are flaunting the Constitution, see how the Constitution defines treason. Then observe what we are doing to build up the enemy in this totally anti-Christ conspiracy. If we continue on this tragic course of aid and trade to the enemy, then the Lord has warned us of the consequences which will follow in chapter eight of Ether in the Book of Mormon.

Thank God for the Constitution, which made it possible for the Lord to establish his church and base of operations here in the United States for these last days. And may God bless the elders of Israel so that when, as President John Taylor said, “the people shall have torn to shreds the Constitution of the United States the Elders of Israel will be found holding it up to the nations of earth and proclaiming liberty” (Journal of Discourses, 21:8).

Now, Christ’s life, his prophet, his church, the Book of Mormon, the Constitution of the United Sates are but a few of the gifts of Christ to bless us, not only at this season, but also throughout our lives.

Hello Holly,

I appreciate your email. I have a cousin who adopted three African American babies and my wife babysat them for quite awhile. We were encouraged that they were raised to embrace their heritage. But still, it is hard to integrate totally with so much bigotry. I don’t believe that passing on the actual quotes from Obama’s book approaches bigotry. It is valuable to know the thinking that may go into decisions he may make as president. Will he support Israel, etc.?

If Romney had written things like Obama did, then I would expect the press to let me know what he has actually written. (The LA Times has video of very incriminating statements by Obama that they will not desiminate. How can we make informed decisions when the press has already made them for us?) How can we dismiss the words written in adulthood that include:

From Dreams of My Father: ‘I ceased to advertise my mother’s race at the age of 12 or 13, when I began to suspect that by doing so I was ingratiating myself to whites.’

From Dreams of My Father : ‘I found a solace in nursing a pervasive sense of grievance and animosity against my mother’s race.’

From Dreams of My Father: ‘There was something about him that made me wary, a little too sure of himself, maybe. And white.’

From Dreams of My Father: ‘It remained necessary to prove which side you were on, to show your loyalty to the black masses, to strike out and name names.’

From Dreams of My Father: ‘I never emulate white men and brown men whose fates didn’t speak to my own. It was into my father’s image, the black man, son of Africa , that I’d packed all the attributes I sought in myself , the attributes of Martin and Malcolm, DuBois and Mandela.’

From Audacity of Hope:’ I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.’

Just an opinion.
