The insight that Orwell gives in this book is amazing. He understood exactly how the process of repression of individual freedoms worked and laid it out very carefully in 1984. There are many facets to this but two that are most striking to me and that are in full force today are invasive surveillance and the redefining of language aka newspeak and political correctness. The really troubling thing about this process is how gradually it occurs and how patient its implementors are. The American people have no clue what is happening all around them to infringe their freedoms and they are even embracing what is occurring. Orwell knew how easily this could happened and warned us against it but we haven't listened. History itself has warned us because the same things have happened over and over again but we haven't learned. Those of us who understand these things need to do more to make it clear to those around us.

I started reading this book and I can't put it down. I don't read as much as I should so I am proud of myself for doing it. I borrowed it from my dad and he is glad I'm reading it.
