The Judgments of God

Posted by Joy Bischoff under: Constitution in Peril; Presidential Election 2008 .

We have tried to keep the LDS slant minimal because we want to be inclusive to all religious people but lately we have been feeling that so much of what is in The Book of Mormon pertains to the trials of the last days that we do not want to stifle that for our many LDS readers. For those who are not LDS, you can skip such articles or simply take a look at our viewpoint or as with this guest blog, the viewpoint of our guest. We also welcome guest blogs from other faiths… in fact, we love them.

The Book of Mormon is clear about what will precipitate the Judgments of God on this Nation:

26 Now it is not common that the voice of the people desireth anything contrary to that which is right; but it is common for the lesser part of the people to desire that which is not right; therefore this shall ye observe and make it your law—to do your business by the voice of the people.

27 And if the time comes that the voice of the people doth choose iniquity, then is the time that the judgments of God will come upon you; yea, then is the time he will visit you with great destruction even as he has hitherto visited this land (Mosiah 29:26-27).

The obvious question to me is this:  Are voters who are working full time or more and striving to provide for their families- (not just physically but emotionally and spiritually, etc.) expected to keep up with esoteric political issues? Can they be expected to determine the need for a gold standard, when experts disagree on it? Or the ulterior motives of the Fed, the nuances of constitutional law and so on- when experts don’t even agree? People who work 8+ hour days and balance that with family don’t have the time to sort out the deep political mysteries.  So is it reasonable to suppose that the justice of God will drop on them like a hammer, because they didn’t perceive the mysteries?

What can they be expected to understand? They can know who’s platform is pro life, pro-traditional-marriage, and pro-agency and personal responsibility.  In short, they can determine who is for moral right and who is not.

If we are fearing God’s judgment as pertains to this Book of Mormon prophecy, I believe God will judge us by the simple choice between right and wrong.  If we choose Obama, we choose iniquity- that ought to be clear.  If the voice of the people chooses McCain, then whatever other dark mystery hides in the wings of American politics, I doubt God’s Judgment will be among them. The choice between moral right and wrong can be understood by the simplest man. I don’t think He will condemn the nation for missing the deep things but I do think He will for ignoring the clear and simple ones.

Our Mission Statement

Encourage people to learn about our Constitution and the freedoms it preserves and to have faith in the Judaeo-Christian principles upon which it is based so that when those freedoms are threatened action may be taken to protect them.

In support of our mission statement, here is our Three-Fold Purpose of the blog, In God We Trust.

1. Defining and spreading an understanding of our Constitutional freedoms for the purpose of sustaining those freedoms.

2. Identifying threats to the unity of the conservative base, and helping people to resist the pressure to compromise values as an answer to political tensions.

3. Spreading the message that the key for healing the nation is showing respect, tolerance and kindness as we accept the political differences of others.
