Does Sarah Palin Make a Difference?

Posted by Joy Bischoff under: Presidential Election 2008 .

Yesterday, I refrained from writing about the race for presidency because my disgust for John McCain was too intense and I did not want that to color my opinions. Today I am ready to attempt an even handed assessment of the Republican ticket.

Last Spring, many of our readers commented on who they believed the VP pick would be. My first choice was Condi Rice but after reading that she did not want the job, I wrote that Sarah Palin was who I believed would get the nod. I am very supportive of her and after listening to her speech last night, I believe she could single handedly bring our nation back from the brink of disaster…unless the media or political insiders on both sides of the aisle found a way to stop her.

Here are my reasons for someone to vote for the Republican ticket: If Sarah was at the top of the ticket, I would vote for her even with John McCain as her VP. Because of his age, I fully understand those who will vote for McCain on the chance that Palin will end up president.  I also understand that there is a good chance that Senator McCain will appoint moderate judges instead of the liberal judges that Senator Obama would appoint.

And now for my reasons for not voting for the Republican ticket: After watching the senator carefully and reading everything I could about his background, I do sincerely believe he is a true maverick. What that means is that he will do whatever he wants, whenever he wants and will listen to no adviser, and especially not to the rabid ravings of the American peasants.

John McCain is a chauvinist. I do not believe for one moment that he will allow Sarah Palin to interfere with his presidency in any meaningful way.  As I wrote on this site more than once last Spring, John McCain used Mitt Romney as long as he possibly could before throwing him over board. He will do the same with Sarah Palin. If I thought she would be allowed to make a real difference then I would vote for McCain. She is not a dedicated Globalist like McCain and he and his insider cronies will not stand for her interfering with the weakening of our sovereignty through weakened borders, lopsided trade agreements and an out of control environmental policy.

I cannot vote for a man whom was forced upon us by the RNC who have been attempting to drive the party toward the center for years. I will bow my head and accept the consequences of four lost years no matter how severe in order to save the conservative base that is our only hope to preserve the Constitution for our children.

I have watched for over a week, bloggers on a Mitt Romney site, going back and forth about whether or not to vote for John McCain. The majority will agree with each other and then someone will speak strongly, telling the others they are wrong if they do not vote for McCain. One woman who has been a part of that community for months was told to find another place where she fit in when she wrote that she would still not support McCain. At other times, they discuss why they shouldn’t support McCain. They are tossed to and fro with every wind of doctrine, to use the words of the apostle Paul.

The general consensus is that when they are feeling that they should not vote for McCain is that they are being emotional and childish. When they are feeling as though they should support McCain, they tell the rest of us that there is a right and a wrong and we should be ashamed of ourselves if we do not vote for Senator McCain. My comments were calm and respectful but were not allowed on. I suggested that there was a logical basis to not voting to move the party left. It was not appreciated. To me, it is more childish to make decisions…and change them…according to what others are saying and the current wave of emotion. Cutting through the peer pressure and looking at the long term effects, I will vote according to my conscience.

Sometimes, Mormons mix up political leaders with religious leaders. Our Republican representatives in government are not prophets and do not need to be blindly followed. Last winter, most of the people who commented on this site insisted they would not vote for John McCain. I suggested that even if this opinion came from careful consideration, the emotional pressure of the last few months of the race would test that resolve. So, for those who agree that our long term good would be damaged by laying down to the RNC and a moderate candidate who will probably not keep his promises (remember how he used Mitt), then I encourage standing up against pressure. For those who believe McCain will keep his promises and that what happens now is more important, or who believe Palin will be allowed to make a difference, I fully support you voting for that ticket and hold nothing against you. I have no right to judge and say either side is wrong. That is a personal decision.

Finally,  would like to salute Sarah Palin for lifting my heart and giving me hope in the common American.  I wish her all the luck in the world. There is still a lot of good in our country.

Our Mission Statement

Encourage people to learn about our Constitution and the freedoms it preserves and to have faith in the Judaeo-Christian principles upon which it is based so that when those freedoms are threatened action may be taken to protect them.

In support of our mission statement, here is our Three-Fold Purpose of the blog, In God We Trust.

1. Defining and spreading an understanding of our Constitutional freedoms for the purpose of sustaining those freedoms.

2. Identifying threats to the unity of the conservative base, and helping people to resist the pressure to compromise values as an answer to political tensions.

3. Spreading the message that the key for healing the nation is showing respect, tolerance and kindness as we accept the political differences of others.
