Thomas Jefferson:

Merchants have no country. The mere spot they stand on does not constitute so strong an attachment as that from which they draw their gains.
In questions of power, then, let no more be heard of confidence in man, but bind him down from mischief by the chains of the Constitution.

In other words, the greedy lack patriotism, for they are more loyal to their profits than their country.
And if the chains of the Constitution are broken or destroyed, oh what mischief may occur.
“Mischief” is not something to be winked at, overlooked or tolerated. According to Webster’s 1828 dictionary, the definition is “harm; hurt; injury; damage; evil whether intended or not.” “Intentional injury; harm or damage done by design. Ill conswquences.”

Wow, that helps clarify the point, Sharon.

I go back and forth between Washington and Jefferson. Washington was so strong, a great leader everyone could rally around. Jefferson was so brilliant and eloquent. We needed them both.
