The Power of Prayer
A story is told about Isaac Potts, a Tory Quaker, who came upon Washington while he was on his knees in prayer. Later Potts said to his wife, “…I feel a presentiment that under such a commander there can be no doubt of our eventually establishing our independence, and that God in his providence has willed it so.” ( George Washington the Christian by William J. Johnson 1976)
Washington’s prayers were answered. There is a little-know account of a miracle that occurred which helped eliminate the near starvation of the army encamped at Valley Forge.
“One foggy morning the soldiers noticed the Schuylkill River seemed to be boiling. The disturbance was caused by thousands and thousands of shad which were making their way upstream in an unusually early migration. With pitchforks and shovels, the men plunged into the water, throwing the fish onto the banks. Lee’s dragoons rode their horses into the stream to keep the shad from swimming on out of reach. Suddenly and wonderfully, there was plenty of food for the army.” (America’s Providential History by Mark A Beliles & Ktephen K. McDowell)
“Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.” Jeremiah 33:3

They didn’t teach me that in school. I just heard the starvation part.

All kinds of great history is being thrown out because there was nobody there with a video camera to prove the event. Bryon, it is very sad that true stories like this aren’t being taught in school. Sharon, thanks for sharing this. Personally, America’s birthday means more to me this year because of the hard times we are going through. I have been thinking a lot about our founding fathers so I love this.

I was taught this story in grade school but my kids never were. They just found the house where George Washington grew up but they are saying the chopping the cherry tree story was probably not true because they didn’t find a cherry tree or an ax. Duh, a chopped cherry tree dies and back then they didn’t waste. They would have burned it or used the wood for furniture. And why would they have left the ax there when they moved? These revisionists who rewrite history really have to stretch things.

Thanks for the reminder in miracles. We are going to need miracles and a lot of prayer to continue what George Washington started.
