U.S. halts some Mexican food imports
Posted: 10:00 PM ET

WASHINGTON (CNN) — The Food and Drug Administration has told growers and the brokers who handle their products that, starting Monday, health inspectors will halt the shipment from Mexico to the United States of ingredients common to Mexican cuisine, sources familiar with the investigation into salmonella poisoning said.

“At the border, what they do is they take samples of these and they send them to their laboratories and the labs examine them for any possible salmonella or E. coli,” said Tommy Thompson, former secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, who said he has been informed of the plan.

Thompson and others told CNN that the probe, which initially focused solely on tomatoes, has been broadened to include scrutiny of cilantro, jalapeno peppers, Serrano peppers, scallions and bulb onions.

I love Mexican food. Then again I like being healthy too.

I always wondered about this. I got it from, “http://www.specialforces.com/newsletter/2008_01/”
I think you will find this interesting.

HOUGH (hoo-a)

“Hough” the familiar army sentiment which roughly means; “can do” or “good-job” has its origins with the Second Dragoons in Florida in 1841. In an attempt to end the war with the Seminoles, a meeting was arranged with the Chief Coacoochee. After the meeting a banquet ensued. Officers of the garrison made a variety of toasts such as “here’s to luck!” and “the old grudge” before drinking. Coacoochee asked Gopher John, an interpreter the meaning of what they said. The interpreter explained that “It means, How d’ye do!” Whereupon the chief with great dignity lifted his cup, and elevated it above his head exclaimed in a deep, guttural and triumphant voice, “HOUGH”.

Florida tomato growers got blamed for the tomato fiasco and it looks like it was Mexico. What fun it will be when the borders get completely erased.

Bryon, interesting fact. I’d always wondered that.

Man rips head from Hitler wax figure in Berlin

BERLIN (Reuters) - A man tore the head from a controversial waxwork figure of Adolf Hitler on the opening day of Berlin’s Madame Tussauds museum on Saturday, police said.

Just minutes after the museum opened, the 41-year-old German man pushed aside two security men guarding the exhibit.

“Then he went over to the figure and ripped off the head,” a police spokesman said.

The man tore off the head in protest at the exhibit, the spokesman added. The police were alerted and arrested the man, who did not resist. He was being investigated for assault and damaging property.

The waxwork figure of a glum-looking Adolf Hitler in a mock bunker during the last days of his life was criticized as being in bad taste. A media preview of the new branch of Madame Tussauds on Thursday was overshadowed by a row over the exhibit.

Critics said it was inappropriate to display the Nazi dictator, who started World War Two and ordered the extermination of Europe’s Jews, in a museum alongside celebrities, pop stars, world statesmen and sporting heroes.

THINKING Says:

You won’t see this repeated in U.S. media outlets, but Europe is running scared of an impending financial disaster.

On July 2, U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson’s European speech was covered live on CSPAN. He gave considerable lip-service to what would happen if a number of U.S. banks were to fail, including even a major U.S. bank. No bank names were mentioned, but the fact that he brought it up indicates that the Europeans are very concerned about it.

The comproller of the United States over currancy stated that 60% of the banks in Florida are in trouble.

What does it all mean…
get out of debt
have plenty of food storage
get your money out of the banks
put savings in food, gold or silver

Foreclosures to rise whoever wins White House

WASHINGTON - Home foreclosures will keep rising next year no matter who is elected president in November.

Even the optimism that surrounds a new president taking office cannot resurrect home values overnight, and presidents have no direct ability to reduce rising mortgage rates. Nevertheless, Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain both promise help for homeowners facing foreclosure.

Obama supports a broader role for government than does McCain. Both envision the Federal Housing Administration providing new, cheaper mortgages to distressed homeowners who otherwise would have difficulty refinancing into more secure government-insured loans with lower monthly payments.

For the plans to work, lenders would have to be willing to take a substantial loss by reducing the amount owed on the loan. But some would have a powerful incentive to do so. A refinancing deal could allow them to recover far more money than they would get from the costly process of foreclosing on the property and trying to resell it.

Obama supports legislation along these lines by Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn., that would help about 400,000 homeowners. People would not have to have good credit to qualify as long as they could show they can afford the new payments.

“If the government can bail out investment banks on Wall Street, we can extend a hand to folks who are struggling on Main Street,” Obama said.

McCain’s plan would provide relief to 200,000 to 400,000 homeowners. The aid would be available only to people who could show they were creditworthy when they got their original loan. The plan offers “every deserving American family or homeowner the opportunity to trade a burdensome mortgage for a manageable loan that reflects the market value of their home,” he said.

The FHA piece of the Dodd plan would cost close to $1 billion. The money would come from diverting dollars in the early years from an affordable housing fund financed by the profits of the mortgage companies Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. McCain’s FHA provision is estimated to cost from $3 billion to $10 billion and would mean either cutting federal spending elsewhere or having the government borrow more. The first choice is to trim spending, a McCain aide said.

Experts predict foreclosures will continue to climb well into 2009. Some believe there is a chance for improvement in late 2009, but more think that will not happen until 2010.

I keep looking for good solid evidence of a silver lining for our economy. Sometimes there are articles by different experts saying why things are getting better. I look for their evidence and I don’t see it. I’m not trying to be gloom and doom. Normally I’m optomistic which is why I am looking so hard for good news. All the facts point the other way. I am getting on here and saying this because I think we really need to take THINKING’s advice while we still can. It might be a lot harder to afford getting some extra food this winter when the prices kick in from the flooding.

Right after I wrote my comment I read this and thought I would post a little of the middle of the article since it relates a little to what we are discussing:

Americans’ unhappy birthday: ‘Too much wrong right now’

By PAULINE ARRILLAGA, AP National Writer

But then talk turns to the state of the Union, and the Optimists become decidedly bleak.

They use words such as “terrified,” “disgusted” and “scary” to describe what one calls “this mess” we Americans find ourselves in. Then comes the list of problems constituting the mess: a protracted war, $4-a-gallon gas, soaring food prices, uncertainty about jobs, an erratic stock market, a tougher housing market, and so on and so forth.

One member’s son is serving his second tour in Iraq. Another speaks of a daughter who’s lost her job in the mortgage industry and a son in construction whose salary was slashed. Still another mentions a friend who can barely afford gas.

Joanne Kontak, 60, an elementary school lunch aide inducted just this day as an Optimist, sums things up like this: “There’s just entirely too much wrong right now.”

Happy birthday, America? This year, we’re not so sure.
