Gas prices change views on energy

WASHINGTON - High gasoline prices have dramatically changed Americans’ views on energy and the environment with more people now viewing oil drilling and new power plants as a greater priority than energy conservation than they did five months ago, according to a new survey.

The poll released Tuesday by the Pew Research Center shows nearly half of those surveyed — or 47 percent — now rate energy exploration, drilling and building new power plants as the top priority, compared with 35 percent who believed that five months ago.

The Pew poll, conducted in late June, showed the number of people who consider energy conservation as more important declined by 10 percentage points since February from a clear majority to 45 percent. People are now about evenly split on which is more important.

The number of people who said they considered increasing energy supplies more important than protecting the environment increased from 54 percent in February to 60 percent and the number of people who favor oil drilling in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge also increased.

“This shows the real impact of higher gas prices on the public,” said Carroll Doherty, associate director for the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press, which commissioned the telephone survey of 2,004 adults from June 18 to June 29. The margin of error was plus or minus 2.5 percentage points, slightly larger for subgroups.

Great one Jesse,
But
“the number of people who favor oil drilling in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge also increased.”

I wonder what that number is. That is a teaser.

Cavetrollhead Says:

2 July 2008 at 1:20 am.

OK it was in the full article. “But in the June survey the number of people favoring drilling there increased to 50 percent, compared to 42 percent last February. Those who opposed drilling fell from 50 percent to 43 percent.”

Great news! People are finally coming to the reality party.

Energy experts puzzled over oil prices

By GEORGE JAHN, Associated Press Writer

MADRID, Spain - As crude soared to a new record, the head of the International Energy Agency declared that the world was in the grip of an “oil shock,” and the president of OPEC acknowledged he could not say whether prices would flatten out or continue to soar.

The comments by IEA chief Nobuko Tanaka, OPEC chief and Algerian Energy minister Chakib Khelil and other industry leaders at the 19th World Petroleum conference reflected the concern surrounding record oil prices that seem ready to spike higher.

An IEA report released at the conference confirmed what most consumers fear: that supplies of oil will remain tight, whether for cooking fires in the poorest countries or powering cars and cooling or heating homes in the richest. And that’s despite record prices and reduced demand as costly crude dampens the world’s oil hunger.

Oil is making millionaires in North Dakota

By JAMES MacPHERSON, Associated Press Writer

State and industry officials say North Dakota is on pace to set a state oil-production record this year, surpassing the 52.6 million barrels produced in 1984. A record number of drill rigs are piercing the prairie and North Dakota has nearly 4,000 active oil wells.

The drilling frenzy has led companies to search for oil using horizontal drilling beneath Parshall, a town of about 980 in Mountrail County, and under Lake Sakakawea, 180-mile-long reservoir on the Missouri River.

“I have heard, anecdotally, that there is a millionaire a day being created in North Dakota,” said Ron Ness, president of the North Dakota Petroleum Council.

Kathy Strombeck, a state Tax Department analyst, said the number of “income millionaires” in North Dakota is rising.

Cave, you are right about the reality party. Most of the news here is about oil and people are forcing it to be a campaign issue so that is good news.

I posted this video link yesterday but it was late in the day so maybe some of you didn’t see it. It tells about our fantastic oil resources and why they are not being developed. Some doubt what he says but it is still worth viewing (in one video or in segments).

Sharon Anderson Says:

Here is an interesting video that indicates they don’t have to go exploring or drilling to find the oil. They already know there is one of the biggest oil fields in the world in Alaska and they know where it is. This video is long but fascinating and well worth watching even though some question this account. You can go to the link and then choose to view it in segments if you want. For those who watch it, I’d like to know what you think.

I’m sorry but I don’t like John McCain. He scares me. This is a paragraph from an article about a senator who said the thought of McCain as president sent cold chills down his spine.

http://www.sunherald.com/newsupdates/story/660742.html

“McCain was down at the end of the table and we were talking to the head of the guerilla group here at this end of the table and I don’t know what attracted my attention,” Cochran said. “But I saw some kind of quick movement at the bottom of the table and I looked down there and John had reached over and grabbed this guy by the shirt collar and had snatched him up like he was throwing him up out of the chair to tell him what he thought about him or whatever. I don’t know what he was telling him but I thought, good grief, everybody around here has got guns and we were there on a diplomatic mission. I don’t know what had happened to provoke John but he obviously got mad at the guy and he just reached over there and snatched him.”

Military strike on Iran would be ‘catastrophic:’ Russian ministry

Any military attack on Iran would have a “catastrophic” effect on the Middle East, a Russian foreign ministry official said Wednesday after reports that Israel might launch such an attack.

“All this is very dangerous. If force is used it will be catastrophic for the whole Middle East,” the official told journalists on condition of anonymity.

The official also said Iran was “ready to look seriously at proposals” presented on June 14 by six world powers aimed at getting the Islamic republic to suspend uranium enrichment. He called Iran’s attitude a “positive signal.”

The comments came after US media reported on June 20 that Israeli jet pilots had trained for a possible strike on Iranian nuclear sites.

Western powers fear Russia is developing a nuclear weapons programme under cover of its stated aim of developing civilian nuclear energy. However Tehran denies such claims.

Russia, a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, has a section of border close to northern Iran in the Caucasus mountains and has been cautious about Western efforts to punish Iran over its nuclear activities.

Carrie, I have zero trust for McCain and Obama.

Sharon Anderson Says:

2 July 2008 at 12:21 pm.

You aren’t the only one. Because of the huge disconnect between the government and the people, the general mistrust of the government seems to be at an all time high.

Bryon Says:

2 July 2008 at 12:32 pm.

Wow, does the media think American pilots have never trained for nuclear strikes against a number of countries and targets? They have every right and the Responsibility to prepare for the worst.

Cavetrollhead Says:

2 July 2008 at 1:50 pm.

Carrie, I don’t like McCain either. But I would like to know what the guy said to McCain. I like the idea of him not presenting weakness at a diplomatic mission. He wasn’t risking unknown soldiers at that meeting, at no risk to himself- he was risking himself. I don’t mind a show of strength like that. I have to admit it actually increases my respect for him.

He scares me too, but this is not why. What scares me about McCain is that he will do anything for his own ambition. He is blinded by it.

Hawk Says:

2 July 2008 at 2:06 pm.

I respect McCain for showing the scumbags he wasn’t afraid of them. So many people think Americans are weak and soft so he probably earned their respect from it.

Bryon Says:

Here is a story I found on the special forces web site. I don’t know were the statistics came from but they shouldn’t be hard to find.

If you consider that there has been an average of 160,000 troops in the Iraq theater of operations during the last 22 months, and a total of 2,112 deaths, when this was written) that gives a firearm death rate of 60 per 100,000 soldiers.

The firearm death rate in Washington D. C. is 80.6 per 100,000 for the same period. (…and that was while handguns were outlawed!!)

That means that you are about 25% more likely to be shot and killed in the U. S. Capitol, which has some of the strictest gun control laws in the nation, than you are in Iraq.

PASS THIS ON ‘cuz you can be sure that CNN, NBC, ABC and CBS won’t!

Conclusion: Just maybe the U.S. should pull out of Washington, D.C. !!!!

Sharon Anderson Says:

2 July 2008 at 2:38 pm.

LOL That’s great Bryon. Thanks for sharing!

Sharon Anderson Says:

2 July 2008 at 2:52 pm.

The conclusion, that is. Not the stats.

Jesse Says:

2 July 2008 at 3:03 pm.

If it were just that one incident then I would cut the guy some slack but there are multiple incidents of McCain losing it. Calling his wife the c word in public, the f word to a bunch of senators, the creepy way he treated people looking into POWs, the way he treated Romney, and lots more. This guy has a screw loose.

Jesse Says:

2 July 2008 at 3:04 pm.

Bryon, I like the conclusion too. Just pull out of Washington D.C.

Oil prices rise to record highs above $144

NEW YORK (AP) - Oil prices shot to new records above $144 a barrel Wednesday as the government reported a bigger-than-expected drop in U.S. supplies and the threat of conflict with Iran weighed on traders’ minds.

Light, sweet crude for August delivery rose as high as $144.13 on the New York Mercantile Exchange shortly after the market closed. The contract also notched a new closing record, settling at $143.57—a full $2.60 above the previous high from a day earlier.

The Energy Department’s Energy Information Administration said crude oil supplies fell by 2 million barrels last week, or about 800,000 barrels more than analysts surveyed by the energy research firm Platts predicted.

Byron, the point is well taken but I am not sure if those stats are correct. I can’t find a clear authority on it.

But it is true that the war in Iraq is the least bloody, (to US soldiers and citizens in general.) However when you consider civilian deaths it has been pretty bad.

I think your post is more a comment on gun control than anything. The liberal pro-gun control crowd don’t make a lot of sense. But when one kids is killed in an accidental firearm death, it overshadows statistics. Pathos over logos.

Stocks post sharp decline after oil price surge; GM falls 15 percent on bearish report

NEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street resumed its sell-off Wednesday after oil hit a new record and a bearish analyst report renewed concerns that General Motors Corp. could run out of cash.

The stock market’s pullback, which accelerated in the final hours of the week’s last full trading day, left the Dow Jones industrial average officially in bear market territory, with the blue chips having fallen more than 20 percent from their October highs.
