Sharon’s Sunday Blog–June 29, 2008

“Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.”
Patriotism is more than standing up when the flag goes by, enjoying fireworks on the Fourth of July, and singing the national anthem. It involves personal sacrifice and commitment. What are we each willing to do to show love for our country?
Plato said, “The penalty that good men pay for indifference to public affairs is to be ruled by evil men.” It takes effort to be informed, but if the general population is not educated about the Constitution and the limits it puts of the federal government then how can we hold our elected officials accountable? If America loses her Constitution and her liberty, the light will go out around the world. Who else will there be to defend the principles of freedom?
I love the hymn, My Country Tis of Thee, especially the fourth verse, which acknowledges God and the Author of our Liberty and asks for him to bless us with His protection and the holy light of liberty.
My country tis of thee,
Sweet land of liberty,
Of thee I sing.
Land where my fathers died!
Land of the Pilgrim’s pride!
From every mountain side,
Let freedom ring!
My native country, thee,
Land of the noble free,
Thy name I love.
I love thy rocks and rills,
Thy woods and templed hills;
My heart with rapture fills
Like that above.
Let music swell the breeze,
And ring from all the trees
Sweet freedom’s song.
Let mortal tongues awake;
Let all that breathe partake;
Let rocks their silence break,
The sound prolong.
Our father’s God to, Thee,
Author of liberty,
To Thee we sing.
Long may our land be bright
With freedom’s holy light;
Protect us by Thy might,
Great God, our King!
May God Bless America

Personal sacrifice is a concept that has been slipping these last few decades but without it we are in big trouble. Thanks for the reminder, Sharon.

Sharon, well put. We are the political light of the world and I can’t imagine the repercussions if our light does goes out. The whole world will feel it.

I agree Ben. If this large and powerful democracy implodes then everybody will abandon democracy. That only leaves a poor selection of governments left.

Right and if the other countries think there won’t be such close scrutiny of civil rights from America, they will try and get away with more. From what I’ve read here we can see that the royal lines of Europe are trying to get back as much power as they can.
