How Britain Lost Its Empire - A Warning for America
Posted by Joy Bischoff under: Constitution in Peril .
I recommend reading this whole column to understand where Pat Buchanan is coming from. He warns that we are following a similar pattern of mistakes here in America. Follow the link at the bottom for more than this small excerpt.
PJB: The ‘Good War’ and the Terrible Peace
By Patrick J. Buchanan
In attacking my book “Churchill, Hitler and ‘The Unnecessary War’: How Britain Lost Its Empire and the West Lost the World,” Victor Davis Hanson, the court historian of the neoconservatives, charges me with “rewriting … facts” and showing “ingratitude” to American and British soldiers who fought World Wars I and II.
Both charges are false, and transparently so.
Hanson cites not a single fact I got wrong and ignores the fact that the book is dedicated to my mother’s four brothers who fought in World War II. Moreover, the book begins by celebrating the greatness of the British nation and heroism of its soldier-sons.
Did Hanson even read it?
The focus of “The Unnecessary War” is on the colossal blunders by British statesmen that reduced Britain from the greatest empire since Rome into an island dependency of the United States in three decades. It is a cautionary tale, written for America, which is treading the same path Britain trod in the early 20th century.
Hanson agrees the Versailles Treaty of 1919 was “flawed,” but says Germany had it coming, for the harsh peace the Germans imposed on France in 1871 and Russia in 1918.
Buchanan does a good job explaining the mistakes that brought about WWII. He sums it up:
…Churchill was right when he told FDR in December 1941 it was “The Unnecessary War” and right again in 1948, when he wrote that, in Stalin, the world now faced “even worse perils” than those of Hitler.

Pat is one of the smartest politicians we’ve ever had. He reminds me of a lot of the founding fathers. He is so logical and not afraid of political correctness, he just says the truth and if people don’t like it, tough.

Very enticing. I will have to get to reading this when I get a minute.

One thing I’ve noticed about Buchanan, when he gets criticized, there are never any solid facts behind it. The documentation in his books is iron proof. It has to frustrate his critics to no end.

Maybe war is a little more evil and manipulated than I thought. But like Buchanan says, that doesn’t take away from the noble people fighting and preserving our freedom even if twisted events led up to it.

I had a history professor in college that showed how that terrible treaty at Versailles made WWII inevitable. Germany was truly pushed into a corner. That doesn’t mean Hitler wasn’t evil like this article says. What he did was horrible but if it wasn’t him it would have been someone else because of what was happening to there people.
