Empathy for the Midwest
Posted by Joy Bischoff under: Emergency Preparation; What's News; World Economy .
Since there is so much about the Midwest flooding in the news, I hesitated to blog on that subject since I did so a couple of days ago. After thinking about it, I decided that other current events didn’t matter much to me today in light of the suffering our fellow Americans are going through. We were in a flood here in Nevada a few years ago and it was a very tough situation. What is happening to thousands right now deserves our prayers and attention. Also, there will be a big effect on the economy as we noted before. This is a very good time to get and stay close to the Lord. I’m not predicting an immediate collapse of society by any means, but outside stresses are building for many families and we need to seek the peace that comes only from one source.

Rising Waters Force Evacuation of Hospital in Flooded Iowa
Friday, June 13, 2008
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Rising water from the raging Cedar River that swamped Cedar Rapids has forced the evacuation of Mercy Medical Center in downtown.
The hospital’s 176 patients, including those in a nursing home facility at the hospital, were being evacuated to other hospitals in the region. The evacuation started late Thursday night and continued Friday morning…
The Cedar River continued to rise in Cedar Rapids, where 100 city blocks were under water.
Dave Koch, a spokesman for the Cedar Rapids fire department, said the river will crest Friday at about 31.8 feet. It was at 30.9 feet early in the morning. In 1993, considered the worst flood in recent history, it was at 19.27 feet.
Koch was still checking with the American Red Cross to see how many people were at the shelters, but said that up to 10,000 people had been displaced and were staying in shelters, with family and at hotels.
On Friday, FEMA Director R. David Paulison was to tour flood damage in Cedar Rapids and other cities.
Gov. Chet Culver declared 83 of the state’s 99 counties as state disaster areas. Nine rivers are at or above historic flood levels.

Joy, I’m glad you aren’t ignoring this. Those poor boy scouts and now all this. There are fires in CA and heat waves, blizzards and droughts and the tornado that wiped out a small town in Kansas. We need to pull together and feel for each other and pray for each other. Those of us not directly effected should still care about all the thousands who are.

I have an aunt living in Iowa so I keep watching this stuff. I feel so bad for everybody. It is kind of freaky watching news last night. They jumped from one disaster to another one so fast it seemed crazy to me. Maybe some people are getting numb to it all but we shouldn’t. We need to feel empathy and love for others.

I hope your aunt is okay Carrie. I’ll say a prayer for everyone suffering.

I’ll be sure to throw a penny in a fountain and wish REALLY hard that everything will be ok.
