Everyone else just concedes when they lose. Hillary has to go consult with someone. There should have been a paparazzi with a sound mike outside wherever she was when she heard the news. It would have been interesting to hear her rant. How can she think her refusal to concede gives her leverage for the vp spot? Obama won so no concession is necessary. All she can do is get her supporters to back Obama, which she should do whether she gets the vp spot or not.

Obama looks to unify Democrats after historic win

By John Whitesides, Political Correspondent 2 hours, 6 minutes ago

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - After making history by capturing the Democratic nomination, Barack Obama turns on Wednesday to the task of unifying a fractured party for a five-month battle for the White House with Republican John McCain.

Obama rocketed from political obscurity to become the first black to win the presidential nomination of a major U.S. party. The Illinois senator on Tuesday locked up the 2,118 delegates he needs for victory at the August convention.

Rival Hillary Clinton, the former first lady who entered the race 17 months ago as a heavy favorite, did not concede and said she would consult with party leaders and supporters to determine her next move.

Rising Prices, Falling Dollar Stoke Memories of the ’70s

By Neil Irwin

Prices have been soaring long enough and fast enough, economists say, that the nation is at risk of a self-reinforcing cycle of inflation like that experienced in the 1970s.

It is a risk Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke highlighted in a speech yesterday, saying that the falling value of the dollar can feed into inflation expectations, and that rapid price escalation, if sustained, “might lead the public to expect higher long-term inflation rates, an expectation that ultimately could become self-confirming.”

For some businesses that already is the reality. Many companies making long-term investments are assuming that prices will rise at a pace well above that of the past 20 years, as they pencil in larger price increases for the supplies they buy and the prices they charge. Consumers are coming to take rapidly escalating food and energy prices for granted. And labor unions are starting to push harder for across-the-board wage increases, though overall wages are still climbing slowly.

Iraq at odds with US over troop presence beyond 2008

The Iraqi government Tuesday said it had a “different vision” from the US over the deployment of American troops in the country beyond 2008 and vowed not to compromise national sovereignty.

Government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh said the cabinet discussed the proposed Status of Forces Agreement which is scheduled to be concluded by next month and agreed that Iraq’s national interests must be protected.

“A joint vision on this issue is yet to be achieved between the two sides, and … the Iraqi side has a different vision, and it will not undercut or be negligent towards Iraqis’ rights and sovereignty,” Dabbagh said.

Cameron, it is weird that Hillary is acting this way. Doesn’t she have any advisors who have the courage to tell her how this is making her look? What a pouting cry baby she looks like. It is down right embarrassing. I know she says she is doing it to position herself on issues and the VP slot but this isn’t calculated to earn points with Obama or most of America. Wake up Hillary.

BREAKING NEWS: Dean, Pelosi, Reid set Friday deadline for superdelegates’ choices, move to force end to Clinton bid

With the final primary concluded barely hours before, top Democratic Party leaders in Washington early this morning ratcheted up the pressure to force all remaining uncommitted superdelegates to make their choice of candidate known by Friday — and thus end the now hopeless, one-time frontrunning campaign of New York Sen. Hillary Clinton.

The joint statement was obviously pre-planned and timed for issue shortly after Clinton refused to concede the presidential nomination’s victory to Barack Obama, who’s gained sufficient delegates to clinch the party’s nomination.

Howard Dean, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin, chairman of the Democratic Governors Assn., issued the brief statement for unity just minutes ago:

“The voters have spoken,” they said, adding later, “Democrats must now turn our full attention to the general election. To that end, we are urging all remaining uncommitted super delegates to make their decisions known by Friday of this week, so that our party can stand united.”

I wonder how many people will die because of this?

US ships to leave cyclone-hit Myanmar after junta snub

YANGON (AFP) - US warships laden with supplies for Myanmar’s cyclone victims will sail away after the junta refused their help, even as aid workers Wednesday pleaded for more help to reach about a million survivors.

The US Navy said they would withdraw the four ships — carrying helicopters, amphibious vehicles and water purifying equipment — from off the coast after repeated attempts to convince the regime to let them in.

“But they have refused us each and every time. It is time for the USS Essex group to move on to its next mission,” Admiral Timothy Keating, commander of US Pacific Command, said in a statement.

“I am both saddened and frustrated to know that we have been in a position to help ease the suffering of hundreds of thousands of people and help mitigate further loss of life, but have been unable to do so because of the unrelenting position of the Burma military junta,” he added.

I’m glad I believe in God. Otherwise what has happened in Myanmar would make it hard for me to forgive their government. Knowing those poor suffering people who die are being taken home to a merciful God helps some. I believe that the innocent who die without knowledge will be shown mercy and when I look at the pictures of the victims begging for help, they seem so innocent to me. I will let the Lord judge there government.

Saddened, I agree with you. If this life was all there was then there would be no justice and no true mercy but we know it isn’t.

I am starting to think Mitt has a very good chance of being picked. It’s the economy stupid!

Rep. Marilyn Musgrave urges John McCain to pick Mitt Romney as running mate

Congresswoman Marilyn Musgrave, R-Fort Morgan, today urged presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain, R-Ariz., to select former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney as his running mate.

In a release, Musgrave said Romney represents experience in the economy and will be able to fix a broken Washington political system.

Musgrave also said she admires Romney’s fiscal policies and conservative values.

The following is from an email I get from a list and is by Robert Novak:

It would be difficult to exaggerate the anger among Sen. Barack Obama’s supporters over Sen. Hillary Clinton’s failure to deliver a concession speech Tuesday after Obama clinched the nomination, plus her bid for a place on the ticket. The forced unity between the two camps soon to be presented may be more strategic than real, which is reason for hope by the Republicans.

The bad news for Sen. John McCain was the contrast between his speech in Louisiana and Obama’s in Minnesota. Obama is a great orator, and McCain definitely is not. Obama’s weakness lies in the details of what he proposes-such as dictating to corporations how to spend their profits-and that is what McCain has to start deconstructing. That is not McCain’s style either, but he has to get into it.
