China puts nation on alert to try to stop deadly virus

By CHARLES HUTZLER, Associated Press Writer Sat May 3, 8:12 AM ET

BEIJING - China’s Health Ministry issued a nationwide alert Saturday calling for heightened efforts to control a virus that has caused the deaths of 22 children in one city and shows signs of spreading.

Health bureaus around the country must step up monitoring for hand, foot and mouth disease following a “relatively large” outbreak in the central city of Fuyang, the Health Ministry said in notices on its Web site.

The ministry warned that cases were more numerous this year than in recent years, and the peak for transmission would likely come in June and July.

The outbreak is another concern for China’s communist government as it gears up to welcome hundreds of thousands of foreigners for this summer’s Beijing Olympics. It’s also an uncomfortable reminder of the SARS pneumonia outbreak in 2003, which Beijing tried to cover up but then adopted drastic measures to control.

Saturday’s warning was prompted by a jump in cases in Fuyang of Enterovirus 71, or EV-71, a type of hand, foot and mouth disease.

Up to Thursday night, 3,321 cases of EV-71 were reported in Fuyang, a fast-growing city in largely rural Anhui province. Besides the 22 deaths, 978 people remain hospitalized, 58 of them in serious or critical condition, the ministry said in a separate statement.

Supreme Court Upholds Indiana Voter ID Law

WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court ruled today 6-3 in favor of the Indiana Voter ID law which requires registered voters to present a valid form of identification when they go to the polls.

Since early voting is already in progress in Indiana for their primary, this law is much needed in the state’s efforts to eliminate voter fraud.

In an amicus brief submitted by The American Civil Rights Union on this case, General Counsel Peter Ferrara explains that, “No one has been denied the right to vote by the Indiana Voter ID Law. The record clearly establishes without challenge that 99% of the Voting Age Population in Indiana already has the required ID, in the form of driver’s licenses, passports, or other identification.”

The ACRU supports the Indiana law because it protects, rather than infringes, the rights of legitimate voters, by helping to ensure that their votes are not watered down by illegal voters.

The full report can be found here.

If there was an ID law a few months ago then Mitt would have won the nomination. Now that republicans are crossing over and doing it to the dems, then they want to change the laws. It makes me sick.

There is a real crackdown on freedom of speech and press in way too many countries lately. It has me worried.

Arab TV feels the pinch of new broadcast limits

Cairo - Spread across the top of this city’s crooked skyline like a field of mushrooms, satellite dishes absorb signals beamed from across the Arab world to send images of pop stars and politicians to the throngs of families living below.

Throughout the Middle East, where governments have long had a powerful grip on the media, satellite broadcasting serves as an important source of information – and entertainment – that has been beyond the traditional reach of the state censors.

But now, according to rights groups and media observers, Arab governments are slowly moving to extend their control of the media to satellite broadcasters, as well.

In February, the Arab League adopted the Satellite Broadcast Charter, a new package of tight guidelines for broadcasters, at the instigation of Egypt and Saudi Arabia, which own two of the region’s main satellites, Nilesat and Arabsat.

The document urges TV stations to “uphold the supreme interests of the Arab countries” and warns them “not to insult their leaders or national and religious symbols” or “insult social peace and national unity.”

Have any of you heard about this in the mainstream media??? Maybe I tuned in at the wrong time, or maybe it isn’t covered so that Americans won’t get overly concerned. (?)

Mississippi flooding dooms farmers’ crops (April 28. 2008)

Hundreds of thousands of farmland is underwater due to flooding, and Mississippi farmers have nothing to do but wait it out.

The River’s water level is at its highest in three decades, and officials agree that, once the water finally recedes, the damage will be extensive.

According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, about 855,750 acres of farmland are buried under either the Mississippi River’s floodwater, or backwater from nearby Yazoo River. About 273,000 of these acres had been cleared to grow wheat, cotton, soybean, and corn, and many farmers had been just about to harvest their crops when the flooding hit.

Sharon, we are really worried about that out here. Not only that but all the rain this spring is making it so the farmers can’t plant corn. We could have a very serious problem in the making.

This is good news. International corporations are buying up businesses and creating monopolies that give them way too much power and influence.

Microsoft abandons Yahoo bid, rebuffing higher sale price

SEATTLE - Microsoft says it’s dropping its three-month-old bid to buy Yahoo because the two sides can’t agree on an acceptable sale price.

Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer says in a letter sent to Yahoo on Saturday that the software maker was willing to pay $47.5 billion for Yahoo. That’s $33 per share.

Ballmer says Yahoo insisted that Microsoft pay at least $53 billion. That’s $37 per share.

Microsoft’s original offer was $44.6 billion, or $31 per share.
