What is the deal lately? Chicago, now Tijuana, it’s crazy.

MEXICO CITY — On Sunday, following one of the bloodiest days in Tijuana’s history, authorities held no news conferences. The death toll in the gangland-style shootings early Saturday between rival drug traffickers increased to 15 from 13, after two men died of their injuries. But not even the names of the dead were released.

Instead, speculation, rumor and scattered news leaks filled the information vacuum after yet another battle in Mexico’s drug wars.

And there were only tentative answers to the larger questions that worry many here: Is this violence between drug dealers a sign that the Mexican government is winning the wars? Or is it just another symptom of a country slipping deeper into an abyss of lawlessness?

Official silence is common in Mexico, where thousands have been killed in drug-related violence since President Felipe Calderon took office in December 2006. But many analysts believe that Calderon’s decision to send thousands of army troops to Baja California, Veracruz, Michoacan and other states to crack down on the drug trade is reaping a type of dividend.

Hopefully we won’t have so much voting fraud now.

Top court upholds photo ID voting law

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday upheld a tough state law requiring voters to show photo identification before casting a ballot, a decision critics say could keep some blacks and poor people from voting in the November 2008 elections.

Stepping into a partisan political battle, the nation’s high court voted 6-3 to reject a challenge to Indiana’s toughest-in-the-nation voter identification law.

Democrats and other opponents had argued that the law is unconstitutional because it makes it too difficult for some people to vote, especially minorities, the poor, the disabled and the elderly. Those groups are most likely not to have government identification and also tend to vote for Democrats.

Supporters, mainly Republicans, defended the law as necessary to prevent voter fraud and to heighten public confidence in the integrity of elections. The Bush administration supported the law.

Finances in America got straightened out when laws were passed years ago against monopolies. Those laws are no longer being enforced for most industries. In banking and and a lot of other areas, buyouts are going nuts. These monopolies will totally screw up everything. Here are two examples from today:

CHICAGO (AP) - United Airlines and US Airways are in very advanced talks with the expectation of announcing within two weeks that they are combining, a person close to the negotiations told The Associated Press on Monday.

CHICAGO (AP) — Snickers and M&Ms candy maker Mars Inc. is buying Wm. Wrigley Jr. Co., which makes Juicy Fruit and Doublemint gum and Life Savers, for about $23 billion in cash.

The agreement announced Monday has the potential to transform the globe’s confectionary industry and could spawn a series of other combinations.

Y’all think I would go to this much work jist to get a bunch a carrots out of it? I need meat woman.

Matt Says:

Just read two stories that make me nervous. United and US Airways are joining. Mars is buying Wrigleys and the article said a lot more candy makers will probably do the same. When this country was really lopsided with super rich and poor, laws against monopolies were passed that helped straighten that out and get prices in line with competition. The last few years, most of the industries have been getting away with monopolies, especially banking. This is going to bring us a lot of trouble with globalization, power in the hands of the few, and higher prices. Not good.

Gasoline May Soon Cost a Sawbuck
Big New Shock at the Pump Forecast by Two Analysts

Get ready for another economic shock of major proportions — a virtual doubling of prices at the gas pump to as much as $10 a gallon.

That’s the message from a couple of analytical energy industry trackers, both of whom, based on the surging oil prices, see considerably more pain at the pump than most drivers realize.

Gasoline nationally is in an accelerated upswing, having jumped to $3.58 a gallon from $3.50 in just the past week. In some parts of the country, including New York City and the West Coast, gas is already sporting a price tag above $4 a gallon. There was a pray-in at a Chevron station in San Francisco on Friday led by a minister asking God for cheaper gas, and an Arco gas station in San Mateo, Calif., has already raised its price to a sky-high $4.62.

Storms tear through Virginia; homes destroyed in Suffolk

SUFFOLK, VA. — The National Weather Service confirms three tornadoes touched down in central and southeastern Virginia Monday. Associated Press reports authorities say at least 200 people suffered injuries throughout the Commonwealth.

Meteorologist Bryan Jackson of the National Weather Service says the twisters hit Suffolk, Colonial Heights and Brunswick County on Monday afternoon. He described Suffolk’s as a “major tornado.”

Monday evening, Governor Tim Kaine declared a state of emergency for areas of southeastern Virginia that suffered damage.

“Multiple buildings have been destroyed, homes have been destroyed,” Suffolk city spokeswoman Dana Woodson said.

Opec says oil could hit $200

By Carola Hoyos in London

Published: April 28 2008 13:56 | Last updated: April 28 2008 20:03

Opec’s president on Monday warned oil prices could hit $200 a barrel and there would be little the cartel could do to help.

The comments made by Chakib Khelil, Algeria’s energy minister, came as oil prices hit a historic peak close to $120 a barrel, putting further pressure on global economies.

His remarks suggest Algeria wants Opec to continue to resist calls by US and European leaders for the cartel to pump more oil to help ease prices. But Mr Khelil blamed record oil prices on the weak dollar and global political insecurity.

He told El Moudjahid, Algeria’s government newspaper: “I don’t think that an increase in production would help lower prices, because there is a balance between supply and demand and the stocks of gasoline in the United States have recorded a surplus and are at their highest level for five years.”

He added: “The prices are high due to the recession in the United States and the economic crisis, which has touched several countries, a situation that has an effect on the value of the dollar. Each time the dollar falls 1 per cent, the price of the barrel rises by $4 and of course vice versa.”

I stole this from an email. There was much more to it, but I thought this paragraph was compelling:

“Ethanol, as we produce it today, is 20% less efficient than gasoline. It takes 450 pounds of corn to produce enough ethanol to fill the tank of the average American automobile. (Think about that for a minute. It also takes about 450 pounds of corn to feed one person for a year.) It is too corrosive to be shipped via pipeline and must be trucked to distribution points. Added to these negatives…it takes more than one gallon of fossil fuel, coal, oil, or natural gas, to produce one gallon of ethanol.”

I have a great idea! Let’s drill in Alaska, and anywhere in the Gulf of Mexico, and liquefy coal in Utah and so on. It’s so crazy it just might work!
