They keep talking about drafting a Constitution for Iraq. Why don’t we just give them ours? It was written by a lot of really smart guys, it has worked for over 200 years, and
we’re not using it much anymore.

US military recruits more ex-cons
The armed forces face a challenge in meeting recruitment targets
The US Army and Marine Corps recruited significantly more people with criminal records last year than in 2006, amid pressure to meet combat needs.
Statistics released by a congressional committee show 861 people were granted waivers to enlist, up from 457 in 2007.
The crimes included assault, sex crimes, manslaughter and burglary.
The Army says waivers are only granted after careful review and are in response to the challenges of recruiting in a changing society.
The number of people granted waivers are just a small fraction of the more than 180,000 people who entered active duty in the armed forces during the fiscal year that ended in September 2007.
But the perceived lowering of standards is causing concern in some quarters.

US scraps $20 million prototype of virtual fence
By ARTHUR H. ROTSTEIN, Associated Press Writer Wed Apr 23, 3:52 AM ET
TUCSON, Ariz. - The government is scrapping a $20 million prototype of its highly touted “virtual fence” on the Arizona-Mexico border because the system is failing to adequately alert border patrol agents to illegal crossings, officials said.
The move comes just two months after Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff announced his approval of the fence built by The Boeing Co. The fence consists of nine electronic surveillance towers along a 28-mile section of border southwest of Tucson.
Boeing is to replace the so-called Project 28 prototype with a series of towers equipped with communications systems, new cameras and new radar capability, officials said.
Less than a week after Chertoff accepted Project 28 on Feb. 22, the Government Accountability Office told Congress it “did not fully meet user needs and the project’s design will not be used as the basis for future” developments.

This is bullcrap. We are building a high tech fence between Gaza and Egypt but we won’t use the same technology to secure our own border.

China Changes Course, Advocating Tempered Response to Its Critics
BEIJING, April 22 — After weeks of expressing outrage at Western protests over Tibet and the Olympics, officials here have begun tempering their rhetoric in recent days and telling Chinese people to be “rational” about their response.
In state media, Chinese officials had called the protests in the United States and Europe “vile” and “blasphemy.” On Tuesday, however, the state-run China Daily said Chinese “should be ready for criticism.”
“As the country becomes the locomotive of the world economy and plays a bigger part in global affairs, it draws more attention from the rest of the world,” the paper said in an editorial.

Sounds like the Chinese have decided to stop acting like three year olds who throw tantrums and act like sulky teenagers instead. It’s an improvement. Let’s hope they keep on maturing.
