Iran to open uranium processing plant
By ALI AKBAR DAREINI, Associated Press Writer Wed Apr 9, 6:00 PM ET
TEHRAN, Iran - Iran will inaugurate a new uranium ore processing plant in less than a year in Ardakan, central Iran, a top nuclear official said Wednesday.
The nuclear facility will complete one of the early stages necessary for uranium enrichment — a process that can produce either fuel for a nuclear reactor or material for a warhead. Iran is looking to dramatically expand its enrichment program despite U.N. demands that it stop.
Hossein Faghihian, deputy head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran in charge of nuclear fuel, said the Ardakan Yellowcake Production Plant would open before the end of the current Iranian calendar year, which is March 20, 2009.
The plant will process ore extracted from uranium mines into uranium ore concentrate, known as yellowcake.
In the next stage, at the Uranium Conversion Facility in Isfahan, central Iran, the yellowcake is processed into uranium hexaflouride, a gas that is the feedstock for enriching uranium. The gas is taken to the Uranium Enrichment Plant in Natanz, where it is injected into centrifuges for enrichment.
Iran announced Tuesday that it had begun installing 6,000 new centrifuges for enrichment, a move that would triple its number of centrifuges.

I have nothing about nuclear power but I would be stupid to think that they need that much nuclear material to power one country.

It’s no secret that they really want it for weapons.

Powell: Troops in Iraq must be reduced
WASHINGTON - Former Secretary of State Colin Powell said Thursday that President Bush’s successor will have to come to grips with the reality that the United States cannot continue to keep such large numbers of troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Without taking sides in the race for the White House, Powell said, “Whichever one of them becomes president on Jan. 1, 2009, they will face a military force that cannot continue to sustain 140,000 people deployed in Iraq and the 20 (thousand) odd or 25,000 people we have deployed in Afghanistan and our other deployments.

I mayor doesn’t have the power to tell the feds to break the immigration laws. I hope he doesn’t get away with this.
Villaraigosa warns ICE to back off immigration raids
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is asking federal officials to rethink their policy on workplace immigration crackdowns that involve established businesses and to focus on employers that mistreat workers instead.
The mayor said in a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff that work-site raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement could have “severe and long-lasting effects” on the local economy, the Los Angeles Times reported Thursday.
ICE made more than 4,900 work-site arrests nationwide in fiscal 2007, a 45-fold increase over the number in 2001, authorities said.
More than 130 undocumented workers were arrested at a San Fernando Valley manufacturing company in February and over 60 workers were arrested for immigration violations at South Bay-area warehouses last week.
Los Angeles companies such as clothing manufacturer American Apparel Inc. have reported being questioned by ICE officials about their hiring procedures.
Villaraigosa accused federal officials of targeting “established, responsible employers” in industries that rely on “workforces that include undocumented immigrants.”

I thought the dollar was doing better. It really does seem that the MSM is downplaying a lot of news lately about the economy and food storages in order to protect their buddies on Wall Street so people don’t panic.

Maybe it is better not to talk to much about all this because if Wall Street stays steady then we will be better off.

Carrie, I think it always better to have the facts. If your point is that we shouldn’t exaggerate and fear monger then I agree. But people have a right to the facts, especially if they are invested in the market. It is fraud to withhold pertinent information that people need to make smart investment decisions.

Cheney, others OK’d harsh interrogations
By LARA JAKES JORDAN and PAMELA HESS, Associated Press Writer
WASHINGTON - Bush administration officials from Vice President Dick Cheney on down signed off on using harsh interrogation techniques against suspected terrorists after asking the Justice Department to endorse their legality, The Associated Press has learned.
The officials also took care to insulate President Bush from a series of meetings where CIA interrogation methods, including waterboarding, which simulates drowning, were discussed and ultimately approved.
A former senior U.S. intelligence official familiar with the meetings described them Thursday to the AP to confirm details first reported by ABC News on Wednesday. The intelligence official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to publicly discuss the issue.
Between 2002 and 2003, the Justice Department issued several memos from its Office of Legal Counsel that justified using the interrogation tactics, including ones that critics call torture.
“If you looked at the timing of the meetings and the memos you’d see a correlation,” the former intelligence official said. Those who attended the dozens of meetings agreed that “there’d need to be a legal opinion on the legality of these tactics” before using them on al-Qaida detainees, the former official said.
