Is this why they spend so much of their own money to become President?
Clintons made nearly $109M since 2000
By JIM KUHNHENN and DEVLIN BARRETT, Associated Press Writer 1 hour, 3 minutes ago
WASHINGTON - Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and former President Clinton made nearly $109 million since they left the White House, capitalizing on the world’s interest in the former first couple and lucrative business ventures.
The Clintons reported $20.4 million in income for 2007 as they gave the public the most detailed look at their finances in eight years. Almost half the former first couple’s money came from Bill Clinton’s speeches.
“I have absolutely nothing against rich people,” Hillary Clinton told North Dakota Democrats at their party convention Friday night in Grand Forks. “As a matter of fact, my husband — much to my surprise and his — has made a lot of money since he left the White House doing what he loves doing most, talking to people.”
The tax returns are a portrait in post-presidential success. The Clintons, who had lived in taxpayer-paid housing in the governor’s mansion in Arkansas or the White House for years, left the presidency struggling with a legal defense fund stemming from a spate of investigations. They now are wealthy enough that she could lend her presidential campaign $5 million earlier this year.

About this weekend… Each year the Annual General Conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints takes place during the first weekend in April. Isn’t it interesting that these conferences occur at the changing of the seasons? Having just survived extremes of cold or heat, winter or summer, during a more moderate interlude, we prepare for next challenges towards which the earth is moving. We do this by hearing prophetic counsel and learning how to better love and serve the Lord as well as others.
For those of you who are not LDS but want to learn more about what makes Mormons “tick” you might enjoy tuning in to some of the sessions this weekend. (10 am and 2pm Utah time on Sat and Sun.)
Here is a poem I wrote about these gatherings.
THE VOICE OF CONFERENCE
Facing extremes,
we stand on the
edge of seasons.
Spring soon scorches
into summer.
How will we survive
when burning
famines our security?
What cool bowery will
shelter our confidence?
Come, assemble together.
We see leaves turning,
changes churning.
How will we endure?
When commotion blows
cold as winter winds,
what will keep us warm,
be our covert from the storm?
Come, let us listen together.
Sharon Price Anderson
Have a great weekend, everybody.

Sharon I may not tune in to your conference but I have to admit you are a good poet. Enjoy yourself though.

Huge job losses set off recession alarms
By JEANNINE AVERSA, AP Economics Writer 2 hours, 14 minutes ago
WASHINGTON - It’s no longer a question of recession or not. Now it’s how deep and how long. Workers’ pink slips stacked ever higher in March as jittery employers slashed 80,000 jobs, the most in five years, and the national unemployment rate climbed to 5.1 percent. Job losses are nearing the staggering level of a quarter-million this year in just three months.
For the third month in a row total U.S. employment rolls shrank — often a telltale sign that the economy has jolted dangerously into reverse.
At the same time, the jobless rate rose three-tenths of a percentage point, a sharp increase usually associated with times of deep economic stress.
The grim picture described by the Labor Department on Friday provided stark evidence of just how much the jobs market has buckled under the weight of the housing, credit and financial crises. Businesses and jobseekers alike are feeling the pain.

In a half hour us Mormons will be off the threads here and the rest of you can have fun without us for awhile. I’m pretty excited about having a new prophet so I am looking forward to these meetings.

Skybus becomes latest airline to shut down
By Amy Hoak, MarketWatch
Last update: 12:08 p.m. EDT April 5, 2008
CHICAGO (MarketWatch) — Skybus Airlines announced it was shutting down Saturday, with the low-cost airline blaming the “insurmountable” pressures of rising jet fuel costs and a slowing economic environment.
Columbus, Ohio-based Skybus became the fourth airline this week to close or announce plans to do so.
“We deeply regret the impact this decision will have on our employees and their families, customers, vendors, suppliers, airport officials and others in the cities in which we have operated,” the company said on its Web site. “Our financial condition is such that our Board of Directors felt it had no choice but to cease operations.”

We have some Catholics around here so I thought I would post this for them. Seems like religion is going on around here today so this will make it more universal. (pun intended…the word Catholic means universal)
Pope will find diverse church in US
NEW YORK - In his visit this month to the United States, Pope Benedict XVI will find an American flock wrestling with what it means to be Roman Catholic.
The younger generation considers religion important, but doesn’t equate faith with going to church. Many lay people want a greater say in how their parishes operate, yet today’s seminarians hope to restore the traditional role and authority of priests.
Catholic colleges and universities are trying to balance their religious identity with free expression, catching grief from liberals and conservatives in the process.
Immigrants are filling the pews, while whites are leaving them. Nearly one-third of U.S. adult Catholics are now Hispanic, and they worry about being considered a separate, ethnic church.

My brother just lost his job. It feels kind of disturbing to me to watch Wall Street doing better and some people saying things are on their way back up again when I know people who are losing their jobs and gas and food is going higher. It doesn’t feel like things are getting better to me.
Cameron Says:
5 April 2008 at 2:36 pm.
M.G., Wall Street is psycho. The cure was worse than the disease. Getting into debt brought about the problem and getting into more debt to solve their problem isn’t solving anything. It is postponing the inevitable. The rest of us didn’t have someone to bail us out so regular America has to face reality.
I’m sorry for your brother. I’m glad I work for myself because I know some friends who are nervous about their jobs. That’s a lot of stress.
