McCain Compiles List of Running Mates

By DAVID ESPO

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -Sen. John McCain said Wednesday he has begun “getting together a list of names” to choose a vice presidential running mate, and hopes to make an announcement before the Republican convention in early September.

“I’d like to get it done as early as possible. I’m aware of enhanced importance of this issue given my age,” said the Arizona senator, 71.

McCain wrapped up the Republican presidential nomination a month ago.

Interviewed by radio talk show host Don Imus, McCain did not offer any details of his search for a running mate.

“We just started this process of getting together a list of names and having them looked at,” he said.

“If I had a personal preference I’d like to do it before the convention to avoid some of the mistakes that I’ve seen made in the past as you get into a time crunch and maybe sometimes don’t make the announcement right or maybe they have not examined every single candidate.”

McCain has given no hint of his thinking on a running mate, although he frequently speaks warmly of his former rivals for the nomination, particularly former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee. Among the other possible choices are several governors: Minnesota’s Tim Pawlenty, Florida’s Charlie Crist, Mississippi’s Haley Barbour, South Carolina’s Mark Sanford and Utah’s Jon Huntsman Jr.

My personal guess just for the fun of it is Charlie Crist. He gave the nomination to John McCain and can carry the state that caused all the problems in the 2000 election. What is your guess?

Huntsman doesn’t stand a real chance because he can’t deliver a state. McCain will take Utah without help.

Crist.

Mitt will give Michigan to McCain and so many in the Establishment are arm twisting that I am hoping it will be Mitt.

Speaking of MN’s Tim Pawlenty, did anyone catch MN’s Jesse Ventura on Larry King?

Jesse Says:

Sarah Palin, Alaska’s governor. McCain likes hot women.

I don’t think Crist would be considered conservative enough. I think McCain would pick someone like him or Rudy if he could be he has to know he needs a real conservative. I’m hoping for Mitt.

Considering the current situation of this nation, I do not think McCain will pick Crist as his VP. However, I think McCain definitely will tap Crist for one of his Cabinet seats. McCain will need a financial man — like Mitt, Pawlenty or even Carcieri, a moderate Republican Governor from RI. But my personal pick is Joe Lieberman, yes the once Veepee choice of Gore. They both are tight together, and they stand entirely together on a common ground. If it was not for the backfire last year from the Republican Party when McCain mentioned he would have a Democrat on his cabinet, I think McCain would have announced this ticket by now.

He should pick a conservative and of course Mitt would be best but he is so stubborn he will probably pick another moderate like Crist or Lieberman.
