I think the real question to ask before starting a war is whether your goals are attainable. During the Gulf war there was criticism because we didn’t go after Saddam. All of the reasons that were given for not doing so were just as valid when we did go in. How can you establish a democracy by force? Just hoping to prompt some discussion as to how we can win the war in Iraq.
Clinton discusses Iraq with young vets
By DAVID ESPO, AP Special Correspondent Wed Mar 19, 2:48 AM ET
LANCASTER, Pa. - Hillary Rodham Clinton told a group of young veterans Tuesday that one lesson of the Iraq War is not to commit troops “unless you are prepared to go all the way and are prepared to be successful.”
Questioned politely about her plans to begin withdrawing troops within 60 days after taking office, the former first lady also said U.S. forces already have fulfilled the mission they were assigned.
She said the Iraqi government has failed to create a stable political system despite the U.S. effort. “Does that mean we stay for 10 years, 30 years, 50 years? And if at the end of it the Iraqis still haven’t gotten their act together, we’re going to be facing the same tough questions.”
The New York senator made her comments at a discussion to be broadcast by MTV to mark the fifth anniversary of the U.S.-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein from power. The show is sponsored by The Associated Press and MTV.

I’m afraid we are just going to have to adjust to the idea that we are there long term. It has worked in Germany and Japan just fine so I don’t see why it is such a problem here.

There is a big difference between Germany and Japan and then the Middle East. The Arabs believe their land is sacred and it is big problems for them to have infidels there. It makes moderate Muslims into extreme ones. We need to find a way to win and get out but by win, we can’t wait until there isn’t a single terrorist because every country in the world have terrorists of some kind. It just isn’t realistic. I’m not sure how to do it but for our sake we had better find a way or we are going to regret it.

It is such a mess that I can hardly get myself to think about it. I don’t see a solution. I don’t want another Cambodia killing fields but we can’t stay there permanently without looking like conquerers and confirming what the Arabs already think of us.

Bin Laden warns EU over Prophet cartoons
DUBAI (Reuters) - Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden threatened the European Union with grave punishment on Wednesday over cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad.
In an audio recording posted on the Internet, Bin Laden said the cartoons were part of a “crusade” in which he said the Catholic Pope Benedict was involved.
The message was released on the fifth anniversary of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.
