Democrats seek FEC probe of McCain
By JIM KUHNHENN, Associated Press Writer
WASHINGTON - The national Democratic party wants campaign finance regulators to investigate whether Sen. John McCain would violate money-in-politics laws by withdrawing from the primary election’s public finance system.

McCain, who had been entitled to $5.8 million in federal funds for the primary, has decided to bypass the system so he can avoid spending limits between now and the GOP’s national convention in September.
Federal Election Commission Chairman David Mason notified McCain last week that he can only withdraw from public financing if he answers questions about a campaign loan and obtains approval from four members of the six-member commission. Such approval is doubtful in the short term because the commission has four vacancies and cannot convene a quorum.
“John McCain poses as a reformer but seems to think reforms apply to everyone but him,” Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean said Sunday.

I am posting a little of two articles that were right next to each other on Yahoo. I thought it was an interesting comparison after what we talked about last week. Turkey persecutes the Kurds who want a homeland or at least to be left alone. They kill the Kurds and no one is doing anything about it. Serbs are protesting their heartland being taken by Albanians who have been driving out the Serbs. Right now the Serbs aren’t killing any Albanians but the Serbs are being made out to be the bad guys. Double standards.
CUKURCA, Turkey - Turkey’s military said Monday it had killed 41 more separatist Kurdish rebels in clashes in northern Iraq, raising the reported guerrilla death toll in a cross-border operation to 153.
A statement posted on the military’s Web site also said two more soldiers were killed in fighting, but gave no details. The deaths would drive the total Turkish military fatalities since the start of the incursion Thursday to 17. It said the military had hit some 30 targets of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK in the last 24 hours.

KOSOVSKA MITROVICA, Kosovo - Up to 2,000 Serb protesters rallied against Kosovo’s independence in the new nation’s tense north on Monday, a few setting fire to EU flags in what has become a daily challenge to the country’s secession from Serbia.
Protesters gathered beneath a banner reading “Kosovo is Serbia” in the ethnically divided town of Kosovska Mitrovica — as they have every day since Kosovo’s ethnic Albanian leadership proclaimed statehood on Feb. 17.
Serbs — who consider Kosovo the heart of their ancient homeland and the cradle of their Serbian Orthodox faith — reject Kosovo’s independence as illegal.

McCain Says He Could Lose Over War Issue
ROCKY RIVER, Ohio (AP) - John McCain said Monday that to win the White House he must convince a war-weary country that U.S. policy in Iraq is succeeding. If he can’t, “then I lose. I lose,” the Republican said.
He quickly backed off that remark.
“Let me not put it that stark,” the likely GOP nominee told reporters on his campaign bus. “Let me just put it this way: Americans will judge my candidacy first and foremost on how they believe I can lead the county both from our economy and for national security. Obviously, Iraq will play a role in their judgment of my ability to handle national security.”
“If I may, I’d like to retract ‘I’ll lose.’ But I don’t think there’s any doubt that how they judge Iraq will have a direct relation to their judgment of me, my support of the surge,” McCain added. “Clearly, I am tied to it to a large degree.”
The five-year-old Iraq conflict already is emerging as a fault line in the general election, with the Arizona senator calling for the U.S. military continuing its mission while his Democratic opponents urge quick withdrawal.
While most Republicans continue to back the war, many independents and Democrats don’t. That presents a significant challenge for McCain and an opportunity for either Barack Obama or Hillary Rodham Clinton.
McCain acknowledged the war will be “a significant factor in how the American people judge my candidacy.”

This seems like a good solution for now. Serbs rule the parts of Kosovo were Serbs are the majority. This will also help keep those Serbians safer.
Serbia and Russia reject Albanian rule in Kosovo
BELGRADE (Reuters) - Serbia intends to rule parts of Kosovo where “loyal citizens” still look to Belgrade for government, Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica said on Monday.
In a fresh challenge to the West, which backs Kosovo’s independence, and in particular to the European Union, which is due to take over from the United Nations as Kosovo’s supervisor, he said Serbia would do all in its power to exert its authority.
“Serbia will do everything to implement its jurisdiction and state prerogatives for all loyal citizens in Kosovo — Serbs and non-Albanians,” Kostunica said.
“There cannot be normalization of relations with the states that recognized Kosovo independence until they annul their decision,” he added. “Protest rallies will not stop as long as illegal independence is not annulled.”

Cameron, I appreciate all the hard work you do around here to keep us informed. I agree with you that this seems like a good solution. It’s a compromise but a lot better than nothing.

Boy it feels uncomforatable to be on the other side of the US on this, but that is where I find myself. I hope the US doesn’t get to vested in Kosovo’s independence. It sure seems like unnecessary unantagonizing of the mad Putin.
