Mitt Romney will endorse John McCain
Posted by Terrie Soberg under: Presidential Election 2008 .
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Republican campaign dropout Mitt Romney agreed Thursday to endorse Sen. John McCain and asked his national convention delegates to swing behind the party front-runner, according to officials familiar with the decision.Romney collected 280 delegates during his run through the early primaries and caucuses. If enough of them switch, McCain could quickly reach the total of 1,191 needed to clinch the nomination. The officials who disclosed Romney’s plans did so on condition of anonymity. A formal announcement was expected later in the day.
The former Massachusetts governor dropped out of the race last week after it became apparent that toppling McCain would be near impossible given his lead in the hunt for convention delegates.
Romney made his decision on Thursday, one official said. The endorsement came together quickly.
Romney’s campaign notified McCain’s camp after Romney made the decision, and McCain’s campaign adjusted its campaign schedule to fly to Boston to accept the endorsement because the senator was campaigning in nearby Rhode Island.

I listened to his speech and I know why he feels he has to do this but it makes me very sad.

I feel betrayed by him just like I do by Rudy.

I don’t know how to feel about this. I respect Romney a lot. I will have to think about this. Ostensibly, he wants to think of national security first, but I hope this is not a power deal. what would you all think if Mitt turns up on the ticket, or in the cabinet? If he gets an appointment to the cabinet in some position of power in the economy, then I would feel OK, but if he becomes the VP on the ticket, it will not look good. Common people tell me what you think. This is a VERY interesting twist.

I don’t think McCain would pick Romney was V.P. if he were the last man on earth. He truly hates him. It was plain from Mitt’s speech last week that he would do this. He really has to or he can’t get elected in 2012. He knows that. I am sure Mitt doesn’t know the things we talk about here and doesn’t see McCain as anything more than just wrong on the issues. I can’t vote for McCain, especially after all I have learned about him and from this site. Like we keep saying, my eyes are open and now I am responsible for acting in accordance to that knowledge.

I guess I was just sitting here in shock. I should have expected it but after everything we have learned it is just hard to take it in. I always thought Mitt was so focused and determined to defeat the Islamist Jihadists that he maybe wasn’t seeing the whole picture with how badly the conservatives are doing in a defensive war right here at home against the libs. The bigger picture is hard for most people to see. Good thing I have spell check. I must be upset because I keep mispelling everything. I think I am feeling like we are kind of alone.

Well said E.E. I think that Romney wouldn’t have endorsed McCain unless it was clear that he would be the nominee. You noticed he waited until McCain won the last few primaries. I bet you are right E.E. Romney would stand no chance in 2012 (or whenever) otherwise.
I am right with you too T. Fan on the war at home. But remember that politics is a game that you have to play to get elected, no matter how right you are for the job. Plus we have a few more years to scrutinize Romney to see if he is the right guy.
Thanks for piping in. I hope more people do.

I’ll pipe for you CTH. I just plain feel sick but I don’t hold it against Mitt. He would be seen as a traitor if he didn’t do this. I am just sure that if he could take the time to read the article on the political spectrum then he would understand why lots of us can’t vote for McCain.

It doesn’t bother me at all. Mitt has to do this and he knows it. Agree with your adversary when he is in your way like the bible says. We have been learning the difference between values and issues. This doesn’t mean he is compromising his values any more than Daniel did when he served the king of Persia. Very similar situation. That doesn’t mean we can’t be in the background saying we want to go back to Israel.
