Taxing Soft Drinks
Posted by Terrie Soberg under: Constitution in Peril; What's News .
On the news last night I saw that the mayor of San Francisco is proposing a tax on soft drinks. His goal is to slim down the city and make the store owners pay for it. A precedent was set for this when tobacco was under fire. Although I am personally against smoking, I was worried then that restricted rights on something so unpopular and obviously unhealthy would pave the way for further loss of freedoms down the road. There is a great deal of talk about obesity which is a serious problem in our country. It may seem logical for the government to become a nanny state (big brother), but I am sure there was a lot of seeming logic in Satan’s plan to not allow free agency and instead force everyone to toe the line. There is no personal growth where there is no choice. Short-sightedness would keep us looking only at specific issues and ignoring the catastrophic end result of becoming a socialist state. Totalitarianism destroys families, freedom of religion, freedom of speech, and self-actualization. This may seem like an extreme reaction but seldom does a nation lose their freedom overnight. It happens in bite-sized pieces so no one will notice, or if they do, everyone will look at them as if they’d lost their mind by over-reacting to something so insignificant. It is the precedent that is the danger and puts us on the slippery-slope.
